The funeral of the driver of the Quad, killed last Friday, took place yesterday in Herstal. Following his death, a real manhunt was launched on social networks. A 25-year-old police officer, unjustly accused of being the author of the fatal shooting, is threatened with death. He can no longer leave his house.
For about a week, he has been wrongly accused of being the author of the shot that killed Domenico D’Atria. “You have to find him and burn him alive so that he suffers”, “Hide well”: on social networks, hate messages and death threats are actively circulating against Maxime.
“What is absolutely incredible is that he finds himself thrown into the woods and in the line of fire for those who obviously want to take it out on him when he is a very person. innocent”notes Alexandre Wilmotte, the policeman’s lawyer. “He has nothing to do with this story except being a police officer.”
His protected family
Since joining the police, Maxime has been wary of social networks. But that did not prevent Internet users from finding him and spreading his photo accompanied by hateful messages. It was one of his colleagues who discovered the images… Since then, the young dad has put his family and himself in safety. “He had to take a whole series of measures to protect his family, his partner, his young child to avoid reprisals”explains his lawyer. “Within seconds his life changed and the consequences are still there today.”
The mayor in the sights
Other police officers have also been threatened on the networks since the August 18 tragedy. The burgomaster of Oupeye also had to change residence. Two people who took part in the riots are currently imprisoned. One of them was planning an attack on the commune. He was in possession of 14 molotov cocktails when he was arrested.
