The use of technology has always been a determining factor in the advancement of medicine over the years. Since the invention of the microscope, which allowed the visualization of previously unknown structures, technological innovation has been an indispensable ally in the improvement of surgical techniques and contributed to make complex procedures feasible. In this context, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) in operating rooms are recent examples of how technology can redefine the limits of modern medicine.

Used in several specialties, including neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, new technological equipment is changing the way doctors see the inside of the human body. With improved visualization and image guidance resources, technology has proven to be an important ally in performing highly complex procedures, reducing risks to the patient and considerably increasing the level of precision in the surgery.

“Technological advancement is creating a true revolution in the field of surgical medicine. The combination of augmented reality and artificial intelligence offers an unprecedented view of brain and spinal structures, allowing complex procedures to be performed more accurately and safely,” explains Guilherme Haddad, director of the medical division of ZEISS Brazil.

In Brazil, the use of technologies has been used mainly in performing cranial and spine surgical procedures. During the last Congress of the Society of Neurosurgery of Rio de Janeiro, held this month in Copacabana, the German multinational ZEISS presented the first medical equipment with a hybrid system in the world to combine the use of augmented reality and artificial intelligence.

Used in reference hospitals in Brazil and around the world, the ZEISS KINEVO 900 Robotic Visualization System allows the surgeon to perform procedures with the aid of a 3D video system, which projects images onto a 55-inch monitor with 4K definition, without the need for binocular lenses. With the Brainlab Curve Navigation System, artificial intelligence software, the equipment enables real-time visualization, significantly improving surgeons’ understanding of the patient’s specific anatomy.

“The combination of technologies not only facilitates complex procedures, but also reduces surgical time, contributing to a faster recovery of patients. The precision of this set of equipment is so great that it is possible to perform complex neurosurgery in a minimally invasive way”, evaluates Haddad. “As technology continues to evolve, augmented reality is expected to become an indispensable tool for surgeons, improving the health and well-being of millions of people around the world.”
