Although much is currently known regarding the virus, its indirect transmission through contaminated surfaces, animals or insects remains a priority topic of research.
According to the results, “there is no evidence of the virus spreading among flies or cockroaches in homes where there are positive cases of Covid-19.”
“We were taking insect samples in homes that had recent human cases of coronavirus, and some of them also had dogs and cats infected with Covid-19,” said Gabriel Hammer, a study co-author.
He continued, “We suspected that these were high-risk environments, and that insects may be able to become contaminated with the virus if they come in contact with humans, animals or contaminated surfaces.”
Hammer added: “We did not find evidence of the presence of the virus in insects taken from these homes.”
The research team had previously discovered transmission of the Covid-19 virus from humans to pet dogs and cats in homes with confirmed human cases of the virus.
