“Unscrupulous people violently and illegally entered the facilities, where the hospital is temporarily operating, stealing all the biomedical equipment, computer equipment, laboratory equipment, materials, medical devices, medications and other supplies and elements required for the hospital.” functioning of the service provision, leaving the hospital on the brink of a hospital crisis,” said Yenny Elizabeth Contreras Pérez, manager of the El Peñón hospital.

This theft affects nearly 5,000 people, who use the hospital services. Likewise, the manager pointed out that the equipment that was stolen is valued at more than 330 million pesos.

Given the seriousness of this fact, through Resolution 0116, the Mayor’s Office of El Peñón declared a hospital red alert with the purpose of taking urgent measures to avert the crisis aimed at guaranteeing the continuity and timely provision of the public health service.

This declaration will be in force until the operation of the hospital is normalized.

For its part, the Santander Police assured that the necessary investigations are being carried out to identify, locate and capture those responsible for this theft, as well as recover the medical equipment.

“We were informed that during the night an unfortunate event had occurred inside the health center of the municipality of El Peñón. Immediately, the respective actions were taken by the National Police and controls were ordered on all roads entering and leaving the municipality. With the judicial police and the nation’s attorney general’s office, investigations are being carried out to find those responsible for this incident,” said Colonel Gustavo Rodríguez, commander of the Santander Police.

For now, people who require urgent medical attention that involves the use of stolen equipment will be transferred to the nearest hospitals, such as the Bolívar Municipal Hospital or the Vélez Regional Hospital.

A month and a half ago a similar event was recorded in the municipality of Vélez, located in the south of the department of Santander. Two criminals stole expensive medical equipment from the municipal hospital.

Although the exact moment of the outrageous robbery was not recorded on the security cameras, the criminals’ entry into the medical center was captured.

In the images, two men, who were wearing jeans, long-sleeved shirts, hats and masks, can be seen entering the Hospital and walking through the hallways of the place. The criminals, apparently, were already clear about their objective and headed towards it.
