Inside chaotic scene as 3 were killed at Kentucky driver’s license office

Tragedy at Kentucky Driver’s License Office

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A chaotic scene unfolded outside a Kentucky driver’s license office on Friday, leaving three people dead.

Victims Identified

the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Leslye M. Harbin Jr., 18; Antwanette Chillers, 33; and Raysa Pacios Valdes, 29.

“It’s absolutely a tragedy, and I’m surprised there wasn’t more people injured,”

said Police Maj. Donald Boeckman.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses described a scene of panic as gunshots rang out at the busy office. Jalen Eddings, who had been waiting in line, told WHAS-TV that he saw two masked men shoot the man multiple times, including while he was on the ground, before fleeing in a vehicle.

“Like I was just in shock, I couldn’t believe it, it was like something off of a movie,” Eddings said.

Ali Raza, another witness, said he was inside the office when he heard the shots and saw people screaming. A security guard quickly instructed everyone to get on the ground, according to Raza.

“He told us to go back and get on the ground.He saved us basically,” he said.

Police Investigation

Numerous police responded to the scene, setting up evidence markers around an area about 20 feet from the entrance. Police are reviewing surveillance video and are seeking information about a vehicle seen leaving the area.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said it is cooperating with the investigation and that none of its employees were harmed.

Community Response

Kentucky Gov. Andy beshear released a statement on social media calling the shooting “a senseless act of violence.”

Major Boeckman: Thank you for having me. Upon receiving the call, we immediately dispatched numerous units to the scene. Our first priority was to ensure the safety of those still present and to secure the area. We found three victims outside the office, and we began administering emergency care until the arrival of emergency services.

A: the victims have been identified as Leslye M. Harbin Jr., Antwanette Chillers, and Raysa Pacios Valdes. What can you tell us about the investigation into their deaths?

Major Boeckman: Our hearts go out to the families of the victims. we are working tirelessly to bring justice to them. We’re reviewing surveillance footage, gathering witness statements, and investigating a vehicle believed to be involved. We won’t rest until we have a thorough understanding of what happened and those responsible are brought to justice.

A: Witnesses reported seeing a security guardheroically direct people to safety. Can you comment on the role of security personnel in such situations?

Major Boeckman: Absolutely. The quick thinking and bravery displayed by the security guard is commendable. His actions likely saved lives. This reinforces the importance of proper training and a well-coordinated response from all parties involved in public safety.

A: Governor Andy Beshear condemned the shooting as a “senseless act of violence.” What measures do you believe could help prevent such tragedies in the future?

Major Boeckman: I agree with the Governor’s sentiment. Prevention requires a multi-faceted approach. Improving mental health services, stricter gun control, increased public awareness, and better coordination among law enforcement, security personnel, and the public are all avenues we should explore. We must also ensure our public buildings are equipped with the latest safety features and protocols.

A: Major Boeckman,how can the community support the investigation and help ensure the safety of others in similar public spaces?

Major Boeckman: The community has been incredibly supportive. I urge anyone with information about this incident or any other to come forward. Safety is a shared duty. We must all stay vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and follow safety protocols when they’re in place.
