The Ohio-class nuclear submarines equipped with ICBMs have often been the focus of interest in recent weeks. The US Department of Defense recently showed a video about the procurement process for the submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741).

what is known

The US Marine Corps conducted a submarine supply operation using two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters. Operation VERTREP was carried out for this purpose. The submarine was in the Philippine Sea at the time of the replenishment.

The helicopters used winches to lower the cargo onto the submarine. The US Department of Defense released a video clip that does not show how the crew brought the container inside the missile cruiser. However, this part is the most difficult part of Operation VERTREP, as waves regularly roll towards the submarine.

The Ohio-class strategic cruisers carry up to 20 Trident II (D5) ICBMs with a maximum launch range of more than 12,000 km. Each missile can be equipped with multiple nuclear warheads.

USS Maine (SSBN-741) is one of 14 Ohio-class submarines in the Trident system. The submarines USS Louisiana (SSBN-743), USS Wyoming (SSBN-742), USS Rhode Island (SSBN-740) and USS Nebraska (SSBN-739) are also engaged, USS Maryland (SSBN-738), USS Kentucky (SSBN-737), USS West Virginia (SSBN-736), USS Pennsylvania (SSBN-735), USS Tennessee (SSBN-734), USS Nevada (SSBN-733), USS Alaska (SSBN-732), USS Alabama (SSBN-731) and USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN-730).
