Until now, Instagram has limited indexing by search engines to only the public accounts of major professional users. Other types of accounts, including public staff accounts and those of minors, were exempt from this indexing. Additionally, stories and private messages from public professional accounts, as well as images published before 2020, were not indexed.

By July 10, 2025, all public profiles of major users will be affected. Indexing will be retroactive, covering all public content published since 2020. Stories and private messages remain unaffected, and accounts of users under 18 will continue to be invisible to search engines.

How to Opt Out

Users can choose to oppose the indexing of their content. The simplest way is to respond to the notification sent by Instagram by pressing the “Do not allow” button. Alternatively, users can switch their profile to private in the platform settings. Those who wish to keep a public profile can also prevent their content from appearing in search engine results by unchecking the new option in the privacy settings titled “Allow photos and public videos to appear in search engine results.”

Meta specifies that the removal of content from search engines is not immediate. “When this option is disabled, links to your publicly shared content can still appear in search results,” writes the company. It’s advisable to anticipate this technical delay before the new policy takes effect on July 10.
