Intel forced by China to abandon the acquisition of Tower Semiconductor

Commercial and strategic tensions between China and the United States are undermining the projects of Intel, the pioneer and American champion of electronic chips. Presented in February 2022 as an accelerator for the new strategy of the Santa Clara group, the acquisition for 5.4 billion dollars of the Israeli Tower Semiconductor will not take place.

Without news from the Chinese regulatory authorities whose approval was essential for the continuation of the operation, the leaders of the two groups have resigned themselves to throwing in the towel when the August 15 deadline has just passed. Cautious, Intel mentions “the impossibility of obtaining regulatory authorizations in time”, in the plural, but Tower Semiconductor indicates that one in particular was missing. Before the publication of official press releases, the Bloomberg and Archyde.com agencies pointed the finger at Beijing.
