Intel announced Monday that it had succeeded in developing, following ten years of work, new generation glass substrates, a first in the semiconductor industry which should however not be commercialized before the end of the decade.

Unlike organic materials currently available, glass allows ultra-low thickness, as well as better thermal and mechanical stability, which promotes interconnection density, explains the American group in a press release.

According to Intel, these advantages might allow designers to create high-density, high-performance chips for intensive workloads such as artificial intelligence (AI).

The Californian manufacturer explains that the semiconductor industry is expected to reach its limits in terms of deploying transistors on silicon compounds by the end of the decade, making the use of elements such as glass essential. in order to imagine the next generation of semiconductors.

Intel shares rose 0.2% on Monday on Wall Street following this announcement.
