Intense Mexican Monsoon Brings Heavy Rains to Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Sonora, and Durango – National Metereological Service Updates

The Mexican monsoon was established in the northwest of the country and in view of this, intense and very strong rains are forecast for tonight in four states of the country, reported the National Metereological Service (SMN).

In a statement, the SMN pointed out that intense rains (from 75 to 150 millimeters (mm)) will occur in Chihuahua, Sinaloa y Sonoraand very strong (from 50 to 75 mm) in Durango.

The Mexican monsoon is characterized by the seasonal change in the direction of the warm and humid winds between the continent and the ocean, coming from the Atlantic and of the Gulf of Mexico, by the East; and from the Pacific and the Gulf of California, to the west, and converge in the northwest of the Mexican territory.

The rains generated by the monsoon are usually torrential and short-lived, said the Government Mexican.

On the other hand, the Meteorological of Mexico indicated that low pressure channels extended over the north, west and center of Mexico, the ingress of moisture from both oceans and the presence of tropical wave number 12 in the Yucatan Peninsula, will cause, in the next few hours, intense rains in Chiapas and Oaxaca; very strong in Colima, Tabasco and southern Veracruz.

Meanwhile, he warned that in the Pacific Ocean, tropical storm Calvin continues to move away from the national territory and pointed out that its center was located approximately 1,190 kilometers south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

In his forecast for Thursday, the SMN indicated that the Mexican monsoon, tropical wave number 12 and low pressure channels together with the ingress of humidity from both coasts and instability at high levels of the atmosphere will cause very heavy rains in Chiapas, Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit , Oaxaca, Sinaloa and Sonora.

“The rains from contracts strong, they can generate landslides, increase in river and stream levels, overflows and floods, so it is recommended that the population follow the indications of Civil Protection of each entity, “said the agency.

As to temperatures maximum values ​​for Thursday above 45 degrees Celsius were forecast in Baja California and Sonora; from 40 to 45 degrees in Campeche, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Yucatán.

Under these conditions, the SMN recommended that the population avoid prolonged exposure to solar radiation, hydrate adequately, pay special attention to the chronically ill, children and the elderly, as well as follow the indications of the Health and Civil Protection sector.
