Less than 6 months from the Dakar, Audi begins its intensive preparation by participating in the Baja Aragón – a rally around the city of Teruel, in eastern Spain – where three RS Q e-trons will take part in the event. of Spanish rallying, in order to store a maximum of data to prepare the ultimate objective of their season.
The RS Q e-tron is equipped with an energy and reFuel converter, developed for the T1 U category, a category for low-emission racing cars, which does not exist in Baja Aragón. Nevertheless, Audi Sport benefits from an exception to be able to participate.
“Baja is something completely different from the Dakar Rally in almost every way, explains Stéphane Peterhansel. The routes are more winding like in the World Rally Championship, but much longer. You can’t get lost either, because the route is well marked. With these different requirements, the Baja is a good addition to our off-road desert program.
Trials are good, but it’s important to get back into competition mode. This by no means only applies to pilots and co-pilots. Various new team members also familiarize themselves with their surroundings. »
This race is only a complement to Audi’s preparation program, which the German manufacturer will continue in Morocco. “After the Baja Aragón, we will take part in the Rally of Morocco. Thereafter, desert conditions will apply to road and navigation, and the rally will be significantly longer than the Baja Aragón. Other planned tests complete the team’s preparation phase for the Dakar. »
Among the 3 crews of the brand with the 4 rings which will take part in the Baja Aragón, Stéphane Peterhansel and Edouard Boulanger will team up again for the first time since the accident of the French co-driver last January.
“Of course, I’m very careful about my health, but I’m happy to be able to sail with Stéphane again”, said Edouard Boulanger after the first tests in Spain, which began on July 11. This rally will take place on July 21 and 22.
