Among the many forms of ear infections, internal otitis results from a viral or bacterial infection of the labyrinth. This disease, also called labyrinthitis, requires medical care to reduce the risk of complications. If the symptoms of internal otitis are particularly unpleasant, treatments exist to limit them.
There are several different types of ear infections. Each affects a separate part of the ear. There are therefore external, middle or internal otitis, which can be of infectious or bacterial origin.
Internal otitis, also called labyrinthitis, corresponds to an infection or inflammation of the labyrinth. The inner ear is made up of several ducts. This cavity houses the cochlea, the auditory nerve, but also the vestibule, responsible for balance. Internal otitis results from a viral pathology like a cold or influenza. In rare cases, it can also be caused by a bacterial infection such as meningitis or otitis media. Exceptionally, it can be caused by other factors including a stroke, a tumor or allergies.
