Since antibiotic resistance concerns us all, it is essential to raise awareness and inform the general public about this phenomenon to better combat it. Awareness campaigns are organized at global but also European level.

Global Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week – WHO

In 2015, countries adopted a Global Action Plan to combat antimicrobial resistance. Its primary objective is to increase awareness and understanding of the problem of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training. The organization of an annual global awareness campaign was identified as an activity contributing to achieving this objective. An annual campaign from November 18-24 was therefore established to increase awareness and understanding of AMR globally, while serving as an important example of One Health collaboration. This campaign is known as Global Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week.

The theme for Global Week 2023 will remain “ Together, let’s prevent antimicrobial resistance », as in 2022. Indeed, AMR is a threat to humans, animals, plants as well as the environment. It concerns us all. That’s why this year’s theme calls for collaboration across sectors to preserve the effectiveness of these essential medicines. The fight against AMR is a truly global effort, which must be addressed within the framework of the “One Health” approach.

European Antibiotic Awareness Day – ECDC

Following the adoption of the Recommendation of the Council of the European Union (EU) on the prudent use of antimicrobial agents in human medicine in November 2001, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) decided in 2008 to establish the European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD), with November 18th, as a platform to support national campaigns in the region. The EEAD aims to raise awareness of the threat that antibiotic resistance poses to public health and the importance of prudent use of antibiotics.

During the 2022 campaign, ECDC collaborated with social media ambassadors in EU/EEA countries. These ambassadors shared content and raised awareness about antimicrobial resistance, prudent use of antibiotics and EAAD in general between November 17 and 24 in their national languages.

To mark the launch of the 15th EEAD, on November 17, 2022, the ECDC organized an online symposium on the theme “Preventing antimicrobial resistance together”.
