On April 23 is celebrated the International Book Day, which alludes to three dates linked to the literature of three authors. Its origin does not go back that far in time: it was only recognized in some countries at the beginning of the 20th century, and several decades later it was accepted throughout the world.

The Spanish and English language authors had a lot to do with it so that in 1926 it emerged in Cataloniaby the impulse of the Catalan writer Vincent Clavel Andres, the idea of institutionalizing Book Day. Vicente Clavel Andrés proposed his project to the Official Book Chamber of Barcelona and then it was approved by the King Alfonso XIII. But the proposal was slow to materialize at the international level.

April 23 was chosen for the death, in 1616, of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedraby the English playwright and poet William Shakespeareand the Spanish writer Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Actually, Cervantes died on the 22nd (he was buried on the 23rd) and Shakespeare, on the 3rd of May. The confusion occurs because the calendar that he used England it was another and, in that one, Shakespeare’s death had occurred on April 23.

It was not until 1995 that it became a worldwide celebration due to a project of the International Union of Publishers (UTE), which presented it to the United Nations for the Educationthe Science and the Culture.
