International calls for dialogue to get Sudan out of its crisis

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNITAMIS) and the African Union called yesterday to create an atmosphere for dialogue to ensure Sudan emerges from its crisis.
This came during a joint press conference held by Volker Peretz, head of the UN mission in Sudan, and the envoy of the African Union, Mohamed El Hassan Ould Labbat, in Khartoum yesterday.
Peretz demanded the necessity of creating an atmosphere for a real dialogue, guaranteeing the right to peaceful demonstration, ending arbitrary arrests, and releasing political detainees.
“The United Nations and the African Union are committed to working to find a peaceful solution that leads Sudan to a democratic transition, and are ready to facilitate the peace process,” Peretz said.
He added, “We do not have enough time in light of the security and economic deterioration and death in the streets. If Sudan does not reach a solution to the crisis before next June, the situation will become more complicated.”
For his part, the African Union envoy called for the urgency of political actors in Sudan towards a national consensus that would restore the country to transitional constitutional legitimacy and stop the October 25 procedures.
