Gymnasts from Russia were allowed to participate in international competitions in a neutral status from January 1, 2024. The decision was announced by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), follows from the statement, published on the organization’s website.

It is noted that in order to compete in tournaments, Russian athletes must submit an individual application and receive FIG approval. At the same time, “the process should take place without participation and communication with the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus, national federations or national Olympic committees of the two countries,” the document states.

The Russian team reacted to this decision. The head coach of the Russian national gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, said that “athletes should not be required to sign political declarations.” “We will never agree to such a thing,” Rodionenko said, TASS reports. She noted that she sees no point in giving an unambiguous assessment of the decision of the executive committee of the International Gymnastics Federation until the organization develops clear criteria for admitting Russians to competitions.

Earlier in March, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status.
