Following the partial strike of doctors and nurse assistants the previous day… International Nurses Day event

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kwon Ji-hyeon = On the 12th, International Nurses Day, incumbent nurses and students from more than 200 nursing schools held a large-scale rally around Gwanghwamun, Seoul, and urged the enactment of the Nursing Act.

The Pan-National Campaign Headquarters (Pan-National Edition), led by the Korean Nursing Association, held a rally that served as a commemorative event for International Nurses Day, filling all five lanes of Sejong-daero from the intersection of Gwanghwamun Station to City Hall on the afternoon of the same day.

Organizers such as the Korean Nursing Association said that about 100,000 people, including nurses and nursing students, attended the event, but the police estimated that 20,000 to 25,000 attended.

The attendees staged performances such as riding the waves while holding a signboard with ‘Nursing Act’ written on it and shouting, “President, please keep your promise.”

Kim Jeong-bin (20), a student at a nursing college in Gyeongsangbuk-do, explained the reason for attending, saying, “I was upset because I was misunderstood as if the nursing law for social care was for the benefit of nurses.”

Kim Yeong-kyung, president of the Korean Nursing Association, who has been fasting for the enactment of the Nursing Act since the 9th, said in a greeting that day, “The Nursing Act supports the future of our health care, meets the people’s demand for nursing and care, promotes national health, and protects patient safety. I’m sure I’ll make a contribution,” he said.

Pre-service nurses enrolled in nursing colleges complained of fear of the nursing law in ‘Letter to the President’, saying, “Nurses are difficult to receive legal protection because there is no nursing law, and seniors are leaving their patients.”

As the conflict between medical organizations grows ahead of the submission of the Nursing Act to the State Council next week, Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong visits the Korean Nursing Association this morning and visits Chairman Kim, who is fasting, and says, “We are steadily working on the comprehensive plan to support nursing personnel announced on April 25th. By implementing this, we will properly improve the treatment of nurses.”

The day before, the Health and Welfare Medical Solidarity (Medical Solidarity), including doctors and nursing assistants, opposed the enactment of the Nursing Act, staged a second annual leave struggle and condemned the passage of the Nursing Act by the National Assembly.

The medical solidarity is urging the president to exercise his veto right at the cabinet meeting next week, and has announced that he will hold a large-scale general strike on the 17th if the veto right is not exercised.
