Caracas.- This May 12 marks the International Nursing Day, with the aim of paying a well-deserved tribute to all nurses, who worldwide carry out this work for all humanity, as well as paying tribute to Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12 and is considered the founder of modern nursing.

What is nursing?

Nursing is a profession through which the care of patients who need medical attention is put into practice, due to different types of diseases and health disorders and that require special care.

This specialty needs people who are truly committed and who love their work, since it requires certain human and philanthropic characteristics that allow them to perform an autonomous and collaborative quality service.

Origin of the International Council of Nursing


The International Council of Nursing was founded in 1899 and is currently made up of 130 national nurses’ associations.

It is the first organization worldwide that represents all professionals in this specialty. Among its main objectives are:

-Provide excellent quality nursing care for the general population.
-Offer assertive health policies throughout the world.
-Achieve advances in nursing knowledge.
-Greater and better presence of a worldwide known and respected profession.
-Offer competent and satisfactory nursing human resources.


2022 Theme: Nursing: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and Respect Rights to Ensure Global Health

In the celebration of this event, a central theme is selected annually. For the year 2022 the motto is “Nursing: A voice to lead – Invest in nursing and respect rights to ensure global health”.

This is intended to combine efforts aimed at managing support resources for this valuable health sector, in aspects such as training, leadership, employment and nursing practice. Also, ensure the rights of these noble professionals.

It is about making visible the adaptability and resilience of nurses in the face of adverse circumstances in the performance of their work, being recognized as true leaders in the field of health.
