Interview with Pueak-Tisha from the set of Comedy Island, a mixed-reality-comedy series with a small script. In an era where the comedy industry is difficult to move forward

2023-09-23 17:56:51

Already on air since August 31 for Comedy Island, an improvised, lightly scripted series that is the first Thai original series from Prime Vedeo, bringing together talented actors in The comedy community comes together to create unscripted laughs in situations where even the actors themselves don’t know what to expect.

TODAY snatches Tisha Kanticha and Puek Phongsathorn, two Comedy Island actors who will reveal the secrets behind the scenes. along with a perspective on the direction of the comedy industry in an era that has changed

Comedy Island has a signature feature of improvised actors. But behind the scenes, is there an order for cuts when playing out to sea? Or just let it go?

Phueak Phongsathorn: He lets loose a lot until it’s all over. And if anything needs to be added, there may be a little more research. But overall, almost all of the actual things were used.

We will have a workshop first on what is good improvisation. There will be an improv teacher from Italy who will teach via Zoom. We will roughly know that if we encounter a situation like this, what must we do to improvise? They will say “You must say yes” all the time. The basic principle of improvisation in this program is “say yes” to the events that occur. Because sometimes we encounter something that we shoot and we don’t feel like playing, so we avoid it. But confronting things that make you difficult That’s where improvisation comes from in comedy, so we all have a goal that if we encounter something, keep going, keep going, keep going. Improvising is pretty much the same way.

It’s like entering a new acting school?

Taro Phongsathorn: Similar to nature. If he throws some joke at us that we feel won’t go over well. We might break him, “Hey, what’s this? What’s this? I don’t want it!” It will always be to protect ourselves. We won’t play. Because we know that if we play, we won’t survive, but this show (Funny Mission to Break the Island) makes us play even though we know we won’t survive. You have to play to not survive. It was challenging.

Ticha Kanticha: If it were in real life, we’d probably ask a few questions, “Just a moment. What is this? Oh, okay.”

Well, there’s information. But at that time, there was no information, no ideas, and no cutting. “Oh, the language doesn’t match.” They were two movies that played together. And then we meet in the middle and we’re like, “Oh, so you meant this all along? I mean it like this.”

This island has only people competing with each other. But who is the scariest?

Puek Phongsathorn: We think it must be Jack. (Jack-Chalermphon) Because Jack is involved with his older brothers and has a lot of professional comedy. If we analyze the first episode, it feels like we’re afraid of Jack. But those who are defeated in a personal way will be afraid of Khae (Rasami Khae, Fah Kuea Lon) because we feel very much bought into Khae pearls. These two people are not jacks, they are gay.

Tisha Kanticha: Tisha isn’t really afraid of Jack. I think Jack is funny. Feel like we can flow together. Because Jack likes women anyway, in the situation he is still in control. But my arms probably won’t be able to trick me. Brother Khae is a person who does things like this. That is, ready to hit Tisha. No matter how you come, you will die.

When accepting the job, what did you imagine? And is it like you thought?

Phueak Phongsathorn: A little different during improvise, we try to imagine what kind of improvisation he would like us to improvise. If it’s already a series and there’s an improvised part, how will it play out? Still can’t picture it. Still haven’t seen the picture of the stage where it appeared. When I went to see it on the first day and saw the set and said that this is something that needs to be shown, then I went, “Oh, I understand.” It started to have a stage-like feel to it, so gradually I saw the picture and considered that we hadn’t thought about a stage like this. So I still think about how to improvise. When I saw the stage at that time, I started to connect, “Oh, there must be a problem. There must be something coming.”

Ticha Kanticha: At first, I didn’t know anything. The director told him a little, saying, “It’s like this.” It was too broad for Tisha’s imagination. But he said it was a new format. There is a mix of script and improvisation. We thought it would be fun and then we did it with Prime Video and realized, “Ugh! Going to live in Phuket” I’m already an Irish person, wearing bikinis and chilling. But really, even if I read the script, As for the improvised parts, he doesn’t write them at all. I still can’t imagine it as much as actually seeing it and feeling like, “Oh, I have to do it like the first one. The second act is something like that. Okay, I understand the flow.” Because at first it seemed like we had to adjust each other to see what it was like. If you can’t imagine, you have to read the script. You have to see the faces of people who do things like this, feel like this. We meet guests like this. We met tastes like this. We’ll say ‘Oh’ later. That is, Tisha has to go to work and then Tisha will say ‘oh’.

Phueak Phongsathorn: But it’s still good because Jack went ‘Oh’ towards the end of the day. Around the last 2 or 3 queues, Jack spoke up and said, “Ah, I understand.” It was both scripted. And it’s like, “Oh, well, it won’t be a script after all.” Jack just found out. This one is just one person we’ve taken, meaning you don’t have to understand too much. Just walk along that line. But it can be done.

Tisha Kanticha: Honestly, Jack is the person who breaks the most rules. Not just any other work, I saw other people reciting lines. Jack said he couldn’t recite. Because the director didn’t like him naturally, the director asked him to memorize it a little, please memorize it, but Jack said “The director won’t like it.” Well, the director asked him to memorize this one. Jack hasn’t memorized it yet. Awesome Jack, Awesome.

Which problem is the most overwhelming in Comedy Island?

Phueak Phongsathorn: If you can get it and have the greatest peace of mind, that is. If today’s performance were a drama, it would be fine, so I’m not afraid of a single problem. But in this musical, my confidence is zero. Tisha debuts in the musical Let’s Be Wild. You know that you will destroy everyone’s confidence with a show that is very brutal.

Tisha Kanticha: But Tisha has never done anything before either. As a child Watching cartoons, women would sing songs like that and used to play word with friends and sing different words. Skills that I didn’t think I’d use in my life, but suddenly I’m able to use them. It just came to me because we had done it just for fun. And doing dramas in the village, in the grass, hey! It was really used today. There were some things that fit right in with us. We were happy, but felt OK. We weren’t good at this one. We didn’t know how to go about it. It’s like a Chinese scene, I don’t know. There will be moments like “OK, let’s continue, I’m really confused,” but you can go for it.

Phueak Phongsathorn: Very brutal. And the guy sitting downstairs said, “Die like this, you’ll definitely die.” At that time, if you were angry, if it were me, what would you shout? If it were me, what would you shout? Die, there’s only the word death.

The situation is not going anywhere. Or is there something unexpected?

Phueak Phongsathorn: It will be a challenge. It’s not that we didn’t make it, it’s just that later on we’ll find out who the guests will be. Once we had one, we knew there would be many more. Then he would come with a big improvisation, so it was a daily challenge for us. I’ll meet someone soon. There are rumors about who’s coming. I heard that this person has a job these days. Start speculating about who will show up. And if you find it, what will happen?

Ticha Kanticha: I haven’t seen anything like that at all. I still say, “Oh, I don’t have to get up too early tomorrow. Can I ask for something like 10 a.m. onwards? 7 a.m. is too early. What should I eat?” things like this.

Tell me about your co-workers who didn’t come to the meeting today.

Puek Phongsathorn: Talking about Pee Joke (Joke So Cool), people might think he wants to leave home. I want to run away from my wife and go far away to an island where no one can track me down. I would like to argue on behalf of my friend that this is absolutely not true. Because he was willing to let his wife have a GPS tracker to track him. that he would not go astray P’ Joke has a GPS so his wife can always check where he is. And his GPS point was always in the hotel room. There will be a day when his GPS scrolls to the liquor store near the hotel, but hurry back as quickly as possible. Therefore, I consider him the most trustworthy person. I’m comfortable being with you. And I feel sorry for him too.

Ticha Kanticha: Since we are on the island together for a long time, there will be intimacy. Because while waiting in line, it didn’t go out (from the island) and then come back. They’re really together. Dressed up all day, that is, the queue is over. There will be moments like treating each other. People who didn’t know started to know about each other. One person broke up with his girlfriend a hundred times on good terms. One day, I’ll sit and cry about my boyfriend, but hey! The next day, we were together again! The next day they broke up again. It’s like a little therapy session that we have every break.

Puek Phongsathorn: And when you sit and wait, it sits like a circle. It’s like group therapy. Sitting in a row, whoever has something, throws it around and shares life experiences. Good group therapy.

Tisha Kanticha: And the jacks will pretend to ask for knowledge. They’ll ask a lot about sex. Health education is very deep. Then he told Tisha that Tisha couldn’t flirt with him during that time. Jack has a girlfriend. Yo, don’t come near me. And then Jack would come in. And then it will work, Jack.

Phueak Phongsathorn: But in the early days, it was very much like Cha Toi, but after that he kept his own.

Tisha Kanticha: He will come and tell us that he is keeping himself. He must come and tell me. If he didn’t tell him he wouldn’t be able to sleep. He won’t be able to stay. He had to come and tell me. Do you look at I? Do you think about I? We’ll be like, what the fuck, Jack! I walk in my life like this. “You, don’t come near me. You might not be able to provoke me, Tisha.” I just stood there. It was him who walked up and told me.

The ‘funnyness’ of each person in each country is different. How to make people get pearls

Phueak Phongsathorn: From the beginning during the workshop it was difficult. It’s difficult to come and play for people who are funny, but Mek (Mek Tharathorn, director) said to consider that If you can’t survive playing React when people look at someone making a joke and they don’t get it. People will have a funny reaction to that. There will be reactions from people who are like, “Wow, I can’t survive. I won’t survive this joke.” These reactions will help the entire body survive. So we felt that The laughter in some jokes may not be universal. But the reaction of the surrounding people should lead to it becoming an international language.

Tisha Kanticha: I completely agree. Humor in each culture in some countries is different. But there are some things that are universal, such as the reaction of people who don’t know where to go and struggle. No matter where you look at this one, you will know that you are very confused. The face of confusion is the same in every country. It’s a huh, huh, huh, trying to survive. You’ll understand. So it’s the universality of being scripted. There is a story line that she is stranded on an island. She had to survive like this. Then people will understand that it is the same thing. But if it’s something we can’t argue with. And a little difficult is the language. Making jokes like this can’t be translated literally. Or using words that people in one society already know, people will go, “Oh, is this funny?” because it communicates in a different way. There are some pearls that everyone knows in this country. But other countries don’t know.

Ticha Kanticha: Asked if it was fun to watch. People who watch it as a whole believe that it’s definitely fun in terms of the story line. But if you get more specific, some things won’t make sense. The director said that The fact that we look like we don’t know And look at our reaction. Reactions in videos are popular on various platforms. Reactions are one of the universal humours of humanity. Therefore, it feels like just watching the reaction means eating half of it.

In an era where we are increasingly wary of being Politically Correct, many people consider it antithetical to the comedy industry to include satire. What do you think, along with your perspective on the ‘survival’ of the comedy circle?

Phueak Phongsathorn: It must be adjusted according to the situation. We have passed through an era where we can make jokes about everything. Thai style jokes include bullying, hurt, and all kinds of humiliation. The way to survive is to continue adapting. And like us who are comedians It’s all about the sense and the choice of humor to make it just right. Which is the judgment of each person. People who have good sense and know that they can play this one and survive this one will be able to adapt. Then it won’t be a problem.

But for people who may have a strong strategy or joke in some way, that will definitely have an impact. For example, I recently talked with a comedy gang that always played to hurt each other. Had to adjust a lot. In an okay society, it’s still possible to talk. But the platform’s algorithm If you see there’s something going on, it immediately turns yellow and red, so you have to adjust a lot. But people who are funny in a way that doesn’t adhere to any specific way. There is variety and playing according to the actual situation that happens, it should be easy to survive. Personally, I’m someone who doesn’t remember locked jokes. I hardly even knew what they were playing. We don’t remember what the lock is like. And which ones are played and we don’t play again? I’m such a person. So it can go on and on according to the situation, so it doesn’t affect much. If people can flow with the situation, I think they’ll all survive. You just have to be careful and decide which ones can be played. Which one can’t be played?

Ticha Kanticha: It’s affected a lot. As I said, people who can adapt themselves or change themselves according to the situation are easier to entertain and communicate with, but I feel that with many comedians who have their own unique personalities, it can be a little difficult.

If you read various funny articles, many people will have a lot of problems with this. Since the advent of the vogue culture Just like in the US Even if you don’t make a painful joke. But the joke is quite harsh, a lot of sexism, a lot of feminism. It’s like, “Look, I come from this kind of culture. Asian people are like this. Black people are like this.” A lot of what I encountered was in the funny part. There are many debates here. So I think that if there are people who think something is funny. It cannot be shared publicly. Because you may have friends or people who come to see you who are sensitive.

But if you ask me if it exists, it does. Like Dave Chappelle, one of the comedians who speaks quite harshly. And people were very offended. But he is one of the top comedians in the world that people accept and think are funny. But some people may think, “Oh, it’s a porridge. It’s funny.” But in real life they may be afraid but may laugh about this. He might not have come out and said, “Oh, I want to share Dave. Chappelle is so fun.” So it became something that people were wondering where it was going to go. How sensitive will we be?

But we are more aware of things as a big platform like Comedy Island. He would say We can’t say this. We can’t play this one. There will already be caution. Because we have a variety of audiences But what if someone has a relatively large audience? “I make some serious jokes. You can watch.” There will be a group of people. It’s a bit clearly separated. It will come out that one person agrees. One person disagrees and there are quite a lot of debates, so it’s hard to say.

But Tisha feels that it has a lot of impact on the comedy industry by being sensitive. If compared to the movie If no one supports violence But you can still make war movies. Able to make a movie that reflects society, looking at it as a fictitious act. But when it’s funny, there’s a part that says “Oh! You guys make fun of it, so it takes out a lot of that, too, in terms of being funny. Because in the movie it’s still like “It’s a movie about world war” or something like this. How can they say that movies don’t show violence at all? We’ll be releasing a lot of movies. There is no action because it involves shooting guns. So it’s like So comedians leave before their friends, before movies, before documentaries, before news, before many other things. Personally, I think it has a huge impact on the comedy industry. The adapters can stay, let’s see what happens.

Finally, please let the audience follow the mission on the island.

Puek Phongsathorn: Leave a funny mission to break the island of Comedy Island. It’s a personal project and I feel like I’ve never done anything like this. In fact, it makes all the actors, not just me, come out and challenge themselves. Today we shot, we didn’t know what we would find. When the curtain opens, we have to do whatever it takes to make everyone enjoy our show. ‘The show must go on’. To really understand it is today. In the past, if we felt that it didn’t survive, we could ask for a cut. What do you want to do next? We can come up with a plan. But this time we didn’t even have a chance to plan. Everything happened live. Let’s look at the mission that we were captured on the island and had to make everyone happy and laugh. Will we ourselves be able to survive? This 31st August Prime Video

Ticha Kanticha: Please watch. Comedy Island is both scripted and unscripted with story lines. There is improvisation. This is where the fun will be. There is not knowing what will happen. Both the actors and actresses who got involved with this project were excited and had a lot of fun. They said ‘Alright’ every time because it came with excitement. Comes with confusion Comes complete with all the flavors. I really want you to come and see. New experiences together at Prime Video.
