Introducing TikTok Music: A New Music Streaming App for Trending Songs and Personalized Curation

Music streaming applications are abundant around us, and perhaps the most prominent ones in our region are Anghami, Apple Music, and Spotify. But TikTok wants to capitalize on its massive popularity among teens and is launching a new music streaming app called TikTok Music. TikTok Music is very similar to other music streaming apps. It gives users access to a huge variety of songs. Initially, TikTok partnered with major record labels, such as Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music. But TikTok wants to take advantage of its massive popularity — especially among teens — to promote its new app TikTok Music, which offers song recommendations and personalized curation to help users find songs that are trending on TikTok clips. There are options to create collaborative playlists, import your music library from other platforms, and find a song by searching for lyrics. There is even a song identification feature that works similar to Apple’s Shazam. TikTok Music also allows users to interact with songs such as adding comments on songs and albums. Interestingly, the app also has a discoverability feature that allows users to find song suggestions just by swiping vertically, just like you would browse through the TikTo app. TikTok Music has a subscription plan. For now, TikTok Music is only available in Brazil and Indonesia. In Brazil, the monthly subscription costs $3.49, which is the same price as the Apple Music subscription in Brazil. If TikTok Music really wants to compete and capture a large share of the music streaming market, it must offer competitive pricing to attract new users. The price plans of an application such as Anghami differ in our Arab world, but they are close to each other. It’s not clear if TikTok will succeed in this fiercely competitive market, especially with uncompetitive pricing and limited song availability. However, TikTok’s commercial popularity may help boost the app among some users of the social network.
