Investigating the Controversial Breathalyzer Test on 11-Year-Old Girl in Ghent, Belgium: What You Need to Know

In Ghent, an 11-year-old girl had to submit to a breathalyzer test after being involved in a road accident, according to information from Het Laatste Nieuws confirmed by the Ghent police on Wednesday. The latter, however, recognized that it was “perhaps not appropriate” to have the child breathe and indicated that it was investigating the circumstances of this check.

In principle, the police automatically subject anyone involved in an accident with injuries to an alcohol test, whether or not there are signs of intoxication. “There isn’t really a threshold for age. It is in the interest of all parties to be clear on this matter. And the act of blowing is less invasive than a blood test,” explains the Ghent police.

But in this case, the girl’s age was very young and the authorities recognize that in this case, it was probably inappropriate to carry out this examination.
