The inhabitants of rue Grand-Vinâve in Jemeppe (Seraing) are still in shock. This is where Maria Verdoolaege (74) lived with her son and granddaughter.
Part of the body of the septuagenarian, its four limbs and the saw which was used to dismember it, was found on Wednesday in a fridge floating on the waters of the Albert Canal in Oupeye while the police found its trunk and its head. in a smart container which was still in the Meuse near Wandre. In all likelihood, the two containers would have been thrown upstream into the Meuse, at the same time, one moving faster than the other.
On vacation with a friend
When the fridge was discovered, the police thought they had a complicated case to deal with. But in the end it only took them a few days to solve it. It is necessary to write that a testimony for the less challenging came back to their ears. A man, certainly soaked in alcohol, had telephoned the police to say that one of his friends had received the confidences of a third party who had claimed to have killed his mother, before dismembering her! If the testimony had not been taken very seriously, it obviously regained credibility at the time of discovery. Then, when the police scanned the Meuse and found a chip container housing the rest of Maria’s body, it turned out that the chip in the container led the police to its owner, a man living in Jemeppe and a neighbor of Mary.

If the man was exonerated, even Maria’s death was not established. The neighbours, the Ishmael family first, were certain that Maria was in fact on vacation. “We were told that she had gone to Cameroon with a friend. We weren’t worried”, says an acquaintance of Maria.
When questioned, a neighbor told the police the same thing. “On top of that, no one in the family seemed worried,” says another friend who lives not far from Maria’s house. “But it’s true that Maria had difficulties with her son. She had told me once that she had problems with Ishmael. He was squatting in her room and she had to go sleep somewhere else in the house. She didn’t want this to last any longer. I even heard shouts of argument once, but I don’t know who Maria was arguing with.”
Too much bullying?
The noose was therefore tightening on Ishmael, especially since he was nowhere to be found. Investigative means, however, made it possible to locate him when he was in a hotel not far from Zaventem airport. He was to fly a few hours later to Korea.
Questioned at length by the investigators, Ishmael quickly confessed to having killed and dismembered his mother. The man thus explained that he was bullied and humiliated by his mother since his earliest childhood. On July 10, mother and son argued again and there, as Ishmael explains, the son had a blood stroke. He threw himself on his mother and strangled her. Then realizing what he had just done and not wanting to be caught, he grabbed a saw, cut up his mum, placed the limbs and the saw in a small fridge, stole the container neighbour’s chip to place the torso and head there. He finally took everything to the banks of the Meuse, in Jemeppe, to throw the two containers there.
Heard by the investigating judge Doyen, Ishmael was placed under an arrest warrant for murder and imprisoned in Lantin prison.
