IonQ Expands Cloud Access via Canada’s FABrIC Quantum Sandbox

While IonQ dominates mainstream headlines with deals like its August inclusion in Canada’s FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox via CMC Microsystems, market attention bypasses FormFactor. FormFactor supplies critical cryogenic test equipment and probe cards for superconducting and silicon-spin quantum chips, posting record second-quarter revenues of $258.2 million.

The Cryogenic Bottleneck Facing Superconducting Qubits

IonQ builds universal quantum computers using trapped-ion architecture. That’s a vastly different engineering paradigm than the chip-based superconducting and silicon-spin systems pursued by much of the rest of the industry. Those chip architectures operate at temperatures near absolute zero. Testing them has historically required an agonizingly slow process: a full system cooldown cycle for a single sample, followed by a complete teardown to swap it out.

That is where FormFactor steps into the supply chain. According to corporate financial disclosures, the company supplies dilution refrigerators spanning sub-10 millikelvin through 77 Kelvin, along with IQ3000 high-throughput cryogenic probers and qubit-prescreening cryostats. They even operate a cryogenic test service lab in Boulder, Colorado, for firms looking to bypass capital expenditures on testing hardware. Having acquired its dilution refrigerator line from JanisULT in 2022, FormFactor described itself as the largest commercial dilution refrigerator supplier in the United States at the time.

The firm’s hardware lineup expanded with the introduction of Flatiron in March 2026. Flatiron is a benchtop dilution refrigerator capable of hitting roughly 30 millikelvin. Its horizontal architecture grants researchers direct access to the sample stage, letting labs swap samples and reconfigure experiments without stripping vacuum cans and radiation shields. It is an iterative design choice that directly attacks testing latency.

Solving the Copper Cable Crisis at Millikelvin Scales

Scaling a quantum processor introduces wiring challenges that sound deceptively mundane until engineers try to solve them. Every additional qubit requires signal lines running from room temperature down to the millikelvin stage. At scale, conventional coaxial cables run out of physical space while dumping thermal energy into sensitive refrigerators faster than the cooling units can extract it. Qubit counts routinely hit a physical wall made of copper wire.

FormFactor tackled this bottleneck through a March 2025 partnership with Delft Circuits. By integrating Delft’s specialized Cri/oFlex cabling into its cryogenic systems, the company fundamentally altered channel density. Traditional setups yielded roughly 300 signal channels across 12 ports. The integrated cabling setup pushes that capacity to 160 channels per port, maxing out at 1,920 channels in total. That shift converts a fragile laboratory demonstration into a viable early-stage production workflow.

Hardware Agnosticism in a Fragmented Market

The underlying market dynamics favor equipment providers that do not need to pick a single winning computing architecture. Whether a lab pursues superconducting circuits or silicon-spin qubits, both approaches demand rigorous cryogenic testing. As the quantum sector shifts away from one-off academic experiments toward repeatable manufacturing, automated testing equipment becomes non-negotiable.

Yet, with a 20% free cash flow margin bolstering its record quarterly performance, the company sits quietly beneath the radar of standard quantum investor screens. While financial media chases the software announcements and cloud integration deals of high-profile platform providers, the hardware enablers quietly process the physical reality of the quantum transition.
