iOS 17.4: your guests can now manage the music played on your HomePod using SharePlay

The first betas of iOS and tvOS 17.4 bring a new SharePlay aspect: it is now possible to give control over the music to a loved one, simply by having them scan a QR code. The new feature will allow your guests to play DJ at your next party, and currently only works with Apple’s Music app.

Setting up these new expanded controls is quite simple. You will first need to play music on a HomePod or an Apple TV (under the latest beta) before starting a SharePlay session using the dedicated button at the bottom of the screen. All the guest has to do is scan the QR code that appears on the iPhone to gain control of the music. He will then be able to manage the titles currently playing, increase the volume, but also dig into the Apple Music catalog.

It is not necessary for the guest to be a subscriber to the service to take advantage of the feature. The new feature also works with Android smartphones (via the Apple Music app). The connection QR Code appears on the screen if the connection is made via an Apple TV, and we can imagine that it will point the tip of its nose to a potential future HomePod with a screen.

Such a function is reminiscent of Spotify’s Jam, a collaborative playlist allowing you to create a temporary playlist between loved ones. Apple has a similar system mixing SharePlay and QR Code dans CarPlaythus allowing different passengers in a vehicle to control the music.
