iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 compatibility: goodbye iPhone X and 1st generation iPad Pro

Now that iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 have been presented, we know which terminals they are compatible with. iOS 17 requires at least an iPhone XR/XS or iPhone SE 2nd generation (2020). This means that three iPhones cannot pass on the new system: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (all of which have an A11 chip). So that’s the end of updates for the iPhone X, which kicked off in 2017 with an all-new design.

iOS 17 therefore requires an iPhone with at least an A12 chip. Considering that more and more features depended on this chip over the last few years (Live Text, FaceTime effects…), this condition is not really a surprise.

On the tablet side, iPadOS 17 requires at least a 2nd generation iPad Pro, an iPad Air 3, an iPad 6 or an iPad mini 5. There are also tablets that remain on the side of the road, in this case the iPads 1st generation Pro (A9X chip, 2015-2016) and the iPad 5 (A9 chip, 2017).

We note that unlike iOS 17, iPadOS 17 can work on an iPad only equipped with an A10 chip (iPad 6). This isn’t the first time Apple has lowered the minimum specs for iPadOS compared to the iPhone system.
