iOS 27.3 Beta: Standby Mode Expands to iPhone 11 and Later

Apple is expanding the StandBy feature, previously exclusive to the iPhone Duo, to all iPhone 11 and later models with the iOS 27.3 developer beta 1, released this week. The move, which introduces new clock faces, calendar and weather screens, and the ability to save multiple versions of a screen for swiping through, is expected to have its public launch in December.

iPhone StandBy Breaks Free From Duo Exclusivity

StandBy transforms a horizontally positioned, charging iPhone into a smart display showing a clock, widgets, or photos. Initially introduced with iOS 17, the feature maintained a basic framework while the iPhone Duo, with its unique hardware, received deeper customization options. That exclusivity is ending. MacRumors cited Apple’s documentation stating iOS 27.3 will bring the Duo’s StandBy experience to all compatible iPhones. This effectively dismantles a key hardware-software differentiation point that Apple had maintained since the Duo’s launch.

The expansion, confirmed by Digital Trends, means users with a standard iPhone 11 or newer can now access a feature previously locked behind a premium device. Digital Trends noted the original StandBy was often perceived as somewhat rudimentary, with Apple offering a limited range of customizations.

The Clock, Calendar, Weather, and Photo Overhaul

The update, detailed by MacRumors, PCMag, and 9to5Mac, introduces four major enhancements to the StandBy experience. First, the analog and digital clock faces have been significantly redesigned. Users now have a much wider selection of colors and complications—small information widgets layered on the clock face—to customize their display. 9to5Mac described the customization process as similar to personalizing a watch face on an Apple Watch.

Second, two entirely new screen types have been added: a calendar view and a weather view. PCMag clarified that the calendar screen displays upcoming appointments, while the weather screen shows local forecasts. As one Digital Trends writer noted, this makes the StandBy mode a practical bedside tool, stating, “The calendar is something I check several times before bed.”

Third, the photo screen now supports shared albums. Instead of just shuffling through an entire camera roll, users can select a specific shared album, allowing for a slideshow of family or friend photos. Fourth, and perhaps most significantly, users can now create and save multiple versions of any given screen type. These versions can have different colors and complications, and users can swipe between them. GadgetHackers confirmed this applies to multiple versions of the same screen type (e.g., two different clock faces), not switching between fundamentally different types like an analog clock and a calendar. The practical application, as highlighted by Digital Trends, is the ability to swipe from a minimalist clock at night to a full calendar in the morning.

iOS 27.3 Beta – Apple Adds NEW Duo StandBy Mode to iPhone!

Duo’s Unique Edge Remains Intact

It’s not a complete leveling of the playing field. The iPhone Duo retains exclusive hardware capabilities that standard iPhones cannot replicate. MacRumors and PCMag noted that on the Duo, StandBy can be activated in its “book” or “tent” orientations without the device needing to be connected to a power source. A standard iPhone still requires being plugged in and placed horizontally to enter StandBy mode.

PCMag also mentioned that the Duo is receiving separate software updates within this StandBy expansion. These include a one-handed “Reachability” feature, which allows users to swipe down on the display to pull UI elements closer to their thumb, and a new keyboard designed specifically for the Duo’s forward-facing screen.

The exact feature support for each device model remains fluid. GadgetHackers stressed that just because a feature is visible in the current beta does not mean it will be final for the public release. The outlet didn’t rule out the possibility that older compatible models might support the new clock faces but not the multi-version saving feature, although no reporting has yet confirmed this model-specific fragmentation.

Beyond StandBy: Safari, Siri, and Fitness Get a Tweak

The iOS 27.3 beta 1 is more than just a StandBy update. Safari is gaining vertical tabs and an adaptive dark mode that will force a dark color scheme on websites even if they don’t natively support it. PCMag also highlighted this new Safari functionality.

Existing apps are also seeing refinement. The Health app is getting new insights, Fitness+ is adding more strength training workouts, and Freeform is gaining a shape creation tool. On the watch side, MacRumors reported that the previously announced Live Rewind and Siri Recap features in watchOS 27.3 are being further developed. These features, which record surrounding sounds and summarize conversations, are slated for the December public release.

PCMag’s Chris Hoffman was critical of Siri Recap, writing, “Apple says it helps people focus on the moment, but for me, it makes me want to avoid conversations in public altogether.”

The 30-Second Verdict on the Beta

Currently, iOS 27.3 beta 1 is available only to developers registered in Apple’s beta program. It is not a public release. As GadgetHackers and Digital Trends advised, users should not install beta software on their primary devices. Functionality is subject to change before the public launch, and a full backup is essential before attempting an installation.

To test the new StandBy features, developers can simply place their charging iPhone in a horizontal orientation. They should check for the new clock, calendar, and weather screens and, if on an iPhone 11 or newer, try to create a second version of a screen to see if the swipe functionality is working. The public rollout is expected in December, at which point the full extent of the changes will be clear.
