iPadOS 17 will support external cameras and microphones

During the opening keynote of the WWDC23a Apple demonstrated how users will be able to connect an iPad (equipped with a USB-C port) to the Studio Display and use its built-in webcam and microphone from the iPadOS 17.

It turns out that this feature goes beyond the Studio Display’s webcam/microphone integration. In a developer presentation, Apple revealed that *any* USB-C (or USB-A, with adapter) webcam/camera will be usable with iPads, as demonstrated in the video below by content creator Stephen Robles.

So iPadOS 17 now supports external USB webcams #WWDC23

Just like a Mac, where you can plug one of these devices in and start using it right away, the iPad will also recognize these accessories without the need to install third-party drivers.

Additionally, Apple explained that developers will be able to leverage this feature in their apps using the APIApplication programming interfaceor application programming interface.”>1 AVFoundation.

In addition to support, apps will be able to rotate video from external and built-in cameras, allow users to choose audio input, provide echo cancellation optimizations, and more.

This will be another big step towards solving one of the main limitations of iPadOS, so users working with an iPad connected to an external monitor will be able to place a webcam in front of the monitor instead of using the tablet’s camera.
