After testing the rear camera, audio and screen of the iPhone 15 Pro Maxo DXOMARK put to the test a selfie camera of Apple’s new top of the line — and the results were exceptional: the device achieved 149 pointsbeing 145 in photo and 156 on video, occupying the first place ranking for the test.
Most of the scores achieved by the device in specific categories represented the maximum ever achieved by a device in the website’s selfie tests in these aspects. As positive points, the precise exposure and the high dynamic range of the photos were highlighted, in addition to the fast and reliable autofocus, the leaps in detail levels, the effective stabilization and the good isolation of the subject in Portrait mode.
As for the negative points of the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s front camera, DXOMARK highlighted possible color quantization artifacts in photos and videos, as well as occasional differences in the sharpness of different frames when recording videos while walking. Another issue that stood out negatively was noise in “all capture conditions”.
As we can see below, it is quite clear how photos captured with the device’s front camera — as well as with the iPhone 14 Pro Max — actually have more noise than those taken by the Huawei Mate 50 Pro. The noise rating is the lowest on the new iPhone, especially when it comes to photos (61), but also in videos (71).
Other than that, however, the device’s results were highly praised by DXOMARK, including in terms of advances promoted by the software, even with the front camera hardware similar to that of the previous generation. The video performance was especially praised, while the photos, despite the overall score, did not exactly represent the best result ever observed by the site.
In any case, the vehicle highlighted advances compared to the previous model in terms of exposure, bokeh and color, categories in which the device achieved the best result to date. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, therefore, is an “obvious choice” for users who prioritize high quality captures on the front camera.
In video tests — taken in 4K, at 30 frames per second — DXOMARK highlighted the exposure, color, white balance, texture and autofocus as excellent, despite small problems such as noise and a small deviation in rendering skin tones when recording indoors. Variations in sharpness were also observed in motion captures.
The exposure of the videos was considered clear, while the colors were evaluated as natural, including skin tones, and the autofocus was considered reliable. In terms of texture, DXOMARK understood that the device’s front camera left a little to be desired, even though it maintained good levels of detail.
In photos, the evaluation was similar, highlighting colors and exposure, Portrait mode, improvements in dynamic range, in addition to autofocus. Other praised points were the contrast in faces, natural skin tones and capture of details, despite the problem with noise.
