iPhone 15: Sony expects low demand for Apple phones in 2023, according to report

Apple may get a lukewarm reception with its new generation of phones. After predictions that the iPhone 15 will have even less demand than the iPhone 14, new information from the hardware industry reiterates that the US giant may not sell the amount of smartphones it intended at the end of 2023.

According to a report released by the Bloomberg this Wednesday (09), Sadahiko Hayakawa, general director of finance for Sony, says that the recovery of the cell phone market in China is slower than expected, and the scenario is getting worse in the United States. As a result, the last quarter of this year should continue with a decline in sales.

The executive’s speech is in line with expectations of a drop in cell phone sales — which has shown a large shrinkage in recent years due to the semiconductor crisis — for the last quarter of the year. In September, Apple should announce the iPhone 15, but it could be impacted by the difficulties that are reflected in all regions of the world.

We had expected the smartphone market to start to recover from the second half of this fiscal year, but now we expect this not to happen until at least the next year.

The Japanese manufacturer is a supplier of the image sensors used in all iPhone 14 models, and the expectation is that the contract between the companies will be maintained in 2023.

Furthermore, it is reported that Sony is with Yield problems in the production of sensors for the iPhone 15, possibly due to the new manufacturing requirements of the 48 MP sensor which, after being exclusive to the “Pro” and “Pro Max” versions, should also be used in the cheaper models of the line. Sony has not commented on the matter.

The iPhone 15 is expected to bring several improvements over its predecessor, including a new display with Dynamic Island, a 48 MP main camera and the A16 Bionic processor. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will advance to TSMC’s industry-first 3-nanometer lithography A17 Bionic chip.
