iPhone 15: towards a deliberately restricted USB-C port?

The iPhone would switch to USB-C as soon as 2023. However, the good news would come with bad news. Apple would have in mind to restrict the USB-C port.

According to a rumor circulating on the Chinese social media Weibo, the Cupertino company is about to do a trick with its new iPhone model. Indeed, it would include a Lightning-type authentication chip in the USB-C port of the iPhone 15 range, as well as in the charging cable delivered in the box. This chip is presumably intended to control the types of accessories that can be used with phones and their effects on them.

A USB-C to the taste of Lighting

Thanks to its MFI certification, Apple charges licenses to third-party manufacturers. So it’s not at all surprising that the Cupertino company has found a way to continue doing this even after upgrading the iPhone with USB-C. Of course, this approach helps to avoid damage from potentially dangerous and unknown devices, but it could also cause big limitations.

In other words, we could see the same approach Apple took with the entry-level iPad and iPad Pro, where the cheapest model could only go up to 480Mbps, while the more expensive iterations could achieve speeds of up to 40 Gbps – a world of difference between the two.
