One of the hottest rumors about the upcoming “iPhone 15 Pro Max” is the addition of a periscope lens to the model’s set of cameras, which would unlock much more interesting zoom levels on the Apple smartphone. A new rumor, however, promises much more substantial changes for the most expensive model in the line “iPhone 16”, which should only arrive next year.
According to a user identified as Digital Chat Stationon the Chinese social network Weibo, one of Apple’s smartphones for 2024 (presumably the “iPhone 16 Pro Max”) will have a telephoto periscope lens with a 300mm focal length. For comparison, the telephoto lens on the iPhones 14 Pro/14 Pro Max has a focal length of 77mm.
As noted by MacRumorslenses with this focal length level are commonly referred to as super or ultra teleobjetivas, and are often used at sporting events and for photographing animals — but they are also suitable for capturing portraits. With a periscope lens rumored to hit both Pro models next year, adding a super telephoto lens would be a way for Apple to differentiate its two more expensive models.
O leakerwhich has even hit some leaks about Apple products in the past, also said that the Cupertino giant plans to add a main sensor of 1/1.14 inch to the smartphone. If that happens, we would have a sensor 12% higher than the one found on the iPhones 14 Pro/14 Pro Max, which feature a 1/1.28″ sensor.
Among the possible benefits of a larger sensor are dynamic range and an effect bokeh improved. If Apple chooses to increase the size of the sensor’s pixels instead of simply increasing the resolution of the images, we could also see better performance of the iPhone in low light situations.
