iPhones 15/15 Plus vs. 14/14 Plus: what changed from one generation to the next?

2023-09-14 21:20:00

A Apple announced this week its new bets for the future of mobile devices. In an event marked by the confirmation of several rumors, many users may have been disappointed with what was presented — or not.

Therefore, we will show what has changed from iPhones 14/14 Plus To the iPhones 15/15 Plus in order to try to clarify the main differences and updates between the two generations — and, who knows, give a more comprehensive view of them!

Design, size and screen

While the design of the iPhone 15 remains largely the same, the most noticeable change is the replacement of the notch for the Dynamic Island (Dynamic Island) — previously restricted to the iPhones 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, launched last year.

Additionally, the device has a new back panel with dark texture and maintains its water and dust resistance certification IP68. In terms of size and weight, the iPhones 15/15 Plus are slightly smaller and subtly lighter than their predecessors:

The new iPhones also bring other almost imperceptible design changes, featuring slightly more curved edges on the front and back — which minimally differentiates them from their predecessors.

Apple abandoned the Lightning port in favor of USB-C — although this was, in a way, a merely “aesthetic” change. The line comes in pastel colors (black, blue, green, yellow and pink) and continues with sides made of anodized aluminum. This time, however, we don’t have any shade of silver or white — something that has been happening since at least the iPhone 3G.

Despite the slightly thinner edges, the iPhones 15/15 Plus feature panels with dimensions similar to those of the previous generation (6.1 and 6.7 inches), but the display now reaches 2.000 nits of brightness outdoors, double that of the iPhones 14/14 Plus. The lack of a higher refresh rate is also a disappointment; the model remains at 60Hz (no ProMotion here).

The resolution is also a little higher, going from 2532×1170 pixels on the iPhone 14 to 2556×1179 pixels on the iPhone 15, although the pixel density has remained the same (460 pixels per inch). In the Plus models, it went from 2778×1284 pixels in last year’s model to 2796×1290 pixels in this year’s model, with the pixel density going from 458dpp to 460dpp.

Cameras

The non-Pro iPhones now feature a new 48MP main camera — a significant improvement over the 12MP camera on the iPhones 14 and 14 Plus. Notably, the new 2x zoom (using part of the 48MP sensor) captures more details, making up for the absence of a telephoto camera.

In addition, we have the same dual camera system (wide-angle and ultra-angle) as in previous years. The only difference is that the main camera now has a sensor with ƒ/1.6 aperture (previously ƒ/1.5) capable of simulating a telephoto lens of up to 2x, which unlocked a series of new features for Portrait mode.

It is also worth highlighting that Night mode and HDR capabilitiesHigh dynamic rangeor wide dynamic range.”>1 on more basic devices they have also been adjusted to offer more vivid colors and a better balance between light and dark areas in photographs.

Chipset and processing

Following the tradition started in 2022, the iPhones 15/15 Plus feature the same processor launched the previous year in the Pro line: the A16 Bionic. With it, the devices guarantee faster performance compared to the previous generation, which used the A15 Bionic (with GPUGraphics processing unitor graphics processing unit.”>2 5 cores).

In practice, the chipset presents subtle improvements across the board, with slightly higher processing and GPU power and better energy efficiency than the 2022 model, approaching the iPhones 14 Pro/14 Pro Max.

It has the same CPUCentral processing unitor central processing unit.”>3 of 6 cores, 2 of them for performance and 4 for efficiency. The GPU also remains unchanged, with the same 5 cores as the previous generation, as well as 6GB memory.

Battery, recharge and connectivity

The new devices did not bring any improvements in battery life compared to their predecessor models. This contradicts some rumors, which suggested more efficient devices in this regard.

The battery life estimates for the iPhones 15 and 15 Plus, for example, remained the same as their previous generation counterparts, i.e. 20 and 26 hours, respectively.

However, although there will be no increase in battery life (we still don’t know exactly about its physical capabilities), improvements in efficiency may still result in slightly better performance in everyday use of these devices — this, however, only means day-to-day use. day will tell us.

As we reported, wireless recharging remains limited to 15W in MagSafe accessories and 7.5W in accessories without the Apple seal — now with the Qi2 standard. Furthermore, support for Wi-Fi 6E and the Thread protocol only reached the most expensive models.

Finally, even with the switch to USB-C, Apple chose to maintain the same maximum charging speed as previous models: 20W. On the other hand, like the Pro models, the iPhones 15/15 Plus support the DisplayPort standard, allowing users to mirror their iPhone screen on a monitor/TV in 4K at 60Hz (HDR) using just a USB cable. -C for DisplayPort (not included in the box).

Pricing

O iPhone 15 costs from R$7,3 mil (or US$800in the United States and 990€ in Portugal) while the iPhone 15 Plus go out R$8,3 mil (or US$900 in the USA, and 1.140€ in Portugal) — both in the 128GB model. There are also 256GB and 512GB versions.

Comparatively, the iPhones 14/14 Plus, which were previously around 20% more expensive, are now depart from R$6 mil (US$700In the USA; 890€in Portugal) for the 6.1″ model and R$8,6 mil (US$800In the USA; 990€in Portugal) for the model with the larger screen.

What did you think of the changes? Are any of the new models worth buying? Very soon we will talk about these issues in more depth — that is, when we have the opportunity to test them up close, of course.
