iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max vs. 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: detailed comparison

2023-09-14 21:30:00

After the post-launch euphoria has passed, it’s time for our traditional comparisons. Now, let’s look at what changes (and what stays the same) among Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhones: iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Maxand the models that preceded them, the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max!

Unlike what happened last year, when we saw major changes (such as the arrival of Dynamic Island and the Always Active Screen), this year the new features were more timid and focused mainly on the camera — which once again became a point of difference between the Pro and Pro Max models — and on some details, such as the arrival of an Action button .

Without further ado, let’s get to the detailed comparison!

Design

Starting with the new color palette, the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max are available in natural titanium, blue titanium, white titanium and black titanium options. The names of the colors reveal one of the great novelties of the new devices: the presence of aerospace titanium as construction material.

According to Apple, this is the same alloy used in spacecraft for missions to Mars, which gives the device greater resistance and lightness.

Starting specifically on the left side, the iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have a key difference (pardon the pun) in relation not only to the previous generation models, but also to all iPhones already launched.

The silent mode switch leaves and the Action button comes in — which is capacitive and can do things like activate the camera or start a voice recording.

Apple even brought back part of the curved aspect on the sides that was present in its devices from the iPhone 6 to 11 (and is still in the iPhone SE, by the way). Let’s say that Apple found a middle ground between this older look and the completely straight edges that returned on the iPhone 12 — which gives the new devices the thinnest edges ever present on iPhones.

Other than that, visually, there are changes to the camera module (to accommodate the devices’ new photographic capabilities) and the charging port, which we’ll talk about later.

Dimensions and weight

When it comes to size, both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max maintained practically the same dimensions as the previous generation, with the differences mainly focusing on thickness.

With the help of titanium, this year’s models became much lighter than last year’s, which use stainless steel on their sides:

Bodies

We didn’t have any major changes when it comes to the screen. Both the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max maintained the same 6.1 and 6.7 inches as previous models, respectively, as well as details see HDR modesHigh dynamic rangeor wide dynamic range.”>1 and True Tone, wide color tone (P3) and ProMotion (with adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz).

The resolution also remained the same: 2556×1179 pixels (460 pixels per inch) for the iPhone 15 Pro and 2796×1290 pixels (also 460 dpi) for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The maximum brightness of 1,000 nits and peaks also remain the same. brightness of 1,600 nits (in HDR) and 2,000 nits (outdoors) for all models.

Processing

Unlike the iPhones 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which are equipped with the A16 Bionic processor, the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max feature the brand new processor A17 Pro — according to Apple, the fastest ever equipped on an iPhone.

Although it also has a CPUCentral processing unitor central processing unit.”>2 with 6 cores (2 for performance and 4 for efficiency) and a 16-core Neural Engine, the new chip has 6 GPU coresGraphics processing unitor graphics processing unit.”>3 (one more than the A16 Bionic), 19 billion transistors (there are 16 billion in the last generation) and it is also the first from Apple to be produced in a 3 nanometer process.

Speaking specifically about the GPU, it is faster and more efficient especially for games, which are further improved with the presence of a ray tracing Hardware-accelerated to render details like shadow, water, lighting, and atmospheric effects more realistically.

Camera system

It’s not hard to bet that cameras are one of the main (if not the) elements of iPhones today — and they have gained special attention in Apple’s new iPhones for professionals — specifically in the larger model.

The main specifications remained the same as the previous generation for both models: a Pro (triple) camera system with a wide-angle lens (48MP and ƒ/1.78 aperture), an ultra-wide-angle lens (12MP, ƒ/2.2) and a telephoto (12MP, ƒ/2.8).

The big difference is in the optical zoom levels. While the iPhone 15 Pro maintained the up to 3x magnification capability of the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max expands it to up to 5x with one 120mm focal length — which is possible thanks to the innovative tetraprism design that reflects light rays four times and allows it to travel a longer path in the same space.

Another interesting new feature for both devices concerns Portrait mode, which is now “built-in” in the main mode. This way, if the subject of the photo is a person, a dog or a cat, the iPhone automatically captures depth information — there is no need to switch to Portrait mode, as on the iPhones 14 Pro/14 Pro Max. Then, if If you actually want to edit the photo for this mode, just tap the related button.

The front camera remains basically the same as the previous generation, but there are minor new features such as the arrival of Smart HDR 5 mode (which is also present in the rear camera system) to the detriment of Smart HDR 4.

Mobile and wireless connectivity

The iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max also brought some new features in terms of mobile and wireless connectivity, one of the most anticipated of which was the arrival of Wi-Fi 6Ewhich allows users to enjoy faster speeds and lower latency when connected to compatible routers.

Another new feature regarding the iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max is support for protocolo Threadwhich enables stable and fast “conversation” between smart home devices, as well as support for the NavIC satellite navigation system (Navigation with Indian Constellation) in India.

Recharge and data transfer

One of the big news of the year is the exchange of the Lightning connector present in previous generation models for a conector USB-C. Thanks to the A17 Pro chip, which has a USB 3 controller, the iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are capable of transferring data at up to 10Gbps — 20x faster than the speed supported by the Lightning input (480Mbps), present in the previous generation.

In addition, the new port also supports the DisplayPort standard, allowing users to mirror their iPhone screen on a monitor/TV in 4K at 60Hz and with HDR images using just a USB-C to DisplayPort cable — Yes, no adapter is needed.

To do this, however, it is necessary to purchase a USB 3 cable sold separately. The USB-C cable included in the box is still USB 2, that is, it maintains the 480Mbps limitation of the Lightning standard.

In terms of charging, the new models now rely on a widely used standard, being able to recharge Macs, iPhones, iPads and most Android smartphones and accessories currently sold on the market with a single cable.

But if Apple promoted changes when it comes to wired charging, the same cannot be said about wireless charging. Just like the previous generation, the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max can be recharged both via MagSafe and a traditional Qi charger — now in the Qi2 version.

In the latter case, however, the maximum power limit of 7.5W remains – which results in an almost mandatory purchase of a charger with Apple’s magnetic standard if you want to get rid of wires, as it at least reaches 15W .

Battery

When it comes to battery, both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max practically stagnate compared to the models that preceded them.

The 15 Pro continues to offer up to 23 hours of video playback (20 via streaming) and 75 hours of audio playback; The iPhone 15 Pro Max offers 29 hours of video playback (25 via streaming) and 95 hours of audio playback. Yes, we know it’s a slightly questionable metric from Apple, but it is what it is.

Fast charging has also not been improved on any of the devices. While the 15 Pro is capable of increasing its charge from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes, the 15 Pro Max does it in 35 minutes.

We still need to wait for disassembly (teardowns) of the devices to find out if there has been any physical change in the capacities of their batteries, but these are, for now, Apple’s official promises.

Pricing

Something much speculated before launch, the price of the iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max remained the same as the previous generation in the United States — with the difference being that the larger model is now not sold with the 128GB variant, so it necessarily starts at a higher level than before.

Here in Brazil, fortunately, both models are sold at lower prices than the iPhones 14 and 14 Pro Max — the iPhone 15 Pro has prices that range of R$9.300 a R$13.100 and the 15 Pro Max will of R$11.000 a R$14.000. In the United States and Portugal, they start from US$1.000/1.250€ e US$1.200/1.500€respectively.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max cost R$14,500 and R$15,500 at their maximum capacities when launched, for comparison.
