IPL 2022 | Gujarat not drowning in ‘Russell Show’; 8-run win over Kolkata in a thrilling match

Gujarat Titans beat Kolkata Knight Riders by eight runs in IPL 2022. Gujarat beat Kolkata by 148 runs with a target of 157 runs.

Score: Gujarat Titans 156/7 in 20 overs, Kolkata Knight Riders 148/8 in 20 overs.

Earlier in the day, Russell had taken four wickets in an over and was batting at the same pace as Andre Russel. Andre Russell’s unbeaten 48 off 25 balls brought Gujarat to an easy victory.

Russell took the lead but on the other hand Gujarat kept the match under control by taking wickets at regular intervals. Russell’s struggled to find the back of the net as he fell two runs short of his last half-century and 11 runs short of victory.

Kolkata needed 18 runs in the last over to win at Russell’s crease. Russell gave Kolkata hope by hitting a huge six off the first ball of the last over by Alsari Joseph, but in the second ball, Alzari Joseph put Russell in the hands of Loki Ferguson to seal Gujarat’s victory. Rinku Singh (35 off 28 balls) and Umesh Yadav (15 off 15 balls) were the standout performers.

Captain Shreyas Iyer (12), Nitish Rana (2), Sunil Narine (5) and Sam Billings (4) were all disappointed.

For Gujarat, Mohammad Shami, Yash Dayal and Rashid Khan took two wickets each.

Gujarat, who won the match, overtook Rajasthan to regain the top spot in the points table. Gujarat have 12 points from seven matches with six wins and one loss. Meanwhile, Kolkata, who lost their fourth match in a row, slipped to eighth position in the points table. Kolkata have six points from eight matches, including three wins and five losses.

Earlier, Gujarat won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 156 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Hardik Pandya’s half-century (69 off 47 balls) and Gujarat’s hopes were dashed by Andre Russel’s Tim Southee.

Russell took four wickets and Southee three, while Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi took one wicket each.
