Kolkata needed 18 runs in the last over to win at Russell’s crease. Russell gave Kolkata hope by hitting a huge six off the first ball of the last over by Alsari Joseph, but in the second ball, Alzari Joseph put Russell in the hands of Loki Ferguson to seal Gujarat’s victory. Rinku Singh (35 off 28 balls) and Umesh Yadav (15 off 15 balls) were the standout performers.
Captain Shreyas Iyer (12), Nitish Rana (2), Sunil Narine (5) and Sam Billings (4) were all disappointed.
For Gujarat, Mohammad Shami, Yash Dayal and Rashid Khan took two wickets each.
Gujarat, who won the match, overtook Rajasthan to regain the top spot in the points table. Gujarat have 12 points from seven matches with six wins and one loss.
