IPL Stars Reportedly Demand INR 40 Crore Retentions Ahead of 2028 Mega Auction

Top-tier Indian Premier League cricketers are demanding salaries of INR 40 crore to stay with their franchises ahead of the 2028 mega auction. This potential shift in retention valuation follows a pattern of rising player costs and follows the precedent set during the 2025 auction, where marquee names opted for the open market to maximize their worth.

Stars Demand Larger Contracts to Bypass Retention Fees

The demand for INR 40 crore contracts reflects a growing trend among top-tier stars who believe entering the auction is more financially viable than accepting fixed retention fees. This strategy gained momentum after Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer bypassed retention in 2025 to secure deals worth INR 27 crore and INR 26.75 crore, respectively, at auction. Players are increasingly approaching their teams regarding wage increases, feeling that the open market offers better financial feasibility.

Franchises that intend to retain multiple marquee players face a difficult balancing act. In previous cycles, specifically regarding the 2025 mega auction, the BCCI retention rules dictated that a franchise retaining five players had INR 75 crore deducted from its overall purse, irrespective of the individual amounts paid to those players. Some stakeholders previously suggested abandoning the retention system entirely in favor of “Right to Match” (RTM) options to prevent the inflation of player salaries.

Franchise Purse Adjustments for 2028

The ability of teams to accommodate these figures depends heavily on the expansion of the team purse. While the current purse for the 2027 season stands at INR 130 crore, projections for the 2028 mega auction suggest an increase to approximately INR 150 crore. At the 2025 level of INR 120 crore, a INR 27 crore contract for a single player represented nearly one-fourth of the total budget. By increasing the purse to INR 150 crore, teams may find it more feasible to allocate INR 40 crore to a marquee star, as it would account for just over a quarter of the total funds available.

The league's financial growth is strong, with the tournament’s status as a premier sporting property highlighted by the 2022 media rights deal, which reached Rs 48,390.5 crore, or approximately $6.2 billion.

Goa Hosts Auction Despite Retention Deadline Extension

Despite the retention extension, the date and venue for the 2027 mini-auction remain unchanged. The event will take place on December 16 in Goa, marking the tournament’s return to Indian soil for the auction process after three years of hosting these events abroad—including Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi. The auction day itself will coincide with the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, though the BCCI has maintained the current auction schedule.

BCCI Sets Strict Schedule for 2027 Mini Auction

The roadmap for the 2027 mini-auction follows a strict schedule: player registration was scheduled to open on November 2 and close on November 23. Following the retention deadline on November 17, teams have until December 1 to submit their final player choices. The BCCI will release the final auction register, including the specific player sets, on December 3. The 2027 season itself is expected to begin toward the end of March, with previous windows earmarked between March 14 and May 30.
