IPTV in Belgium: Reasons for its Popularity and Risks Involved

L’Internet Protocol Television is an internet television distribution system. If the principle in itself is not reprehensible, the use which is made of it remains illegal. However, more and more Belgians are deciding to try the experiment despite everything. Here’s why.

Unbeatable prices

The main attraction of IPTV is its price. For the price of the box and a little less than twenty euros per month, it is indeed possible to access several thousand channels and tens of thousands of streaming programs.

Of course, it’s not legal, but you can find it everywhere, including on the Internet, and resellers are scrambling to offer more attractive offers than each other.

Almost no danger to the consumer

It is clear that many Belgians are ready to try their luck. And for good reason: if the suppliers actually take big risks, those taken by the consumer are in reality almost nil. Belgium has never yet applied penalties to users of IPTV boxes, which can only be enforced in the event of refusal to cooperate on the part of the user.

The states do not prefer to focus on consumers, who are far too numerous, but rather to attack the source of the problem, that is to say the intermediaries and the streaming platforms.

The main risk for the user therefore remains, most often, to see his IPTV provider being dismantled, and losing access to hundreds of channels overnight.

An unlimited offer

The service offered by most IPTV providers is indeed quite radical and in total violation of the right to broadcast. These give access to an unprecedented catalog of TV channels, but also streaming services such as Netflix, Disney + or Amazon Prime, all with a single subscription. It is easy to understand that many are tempted.

Consumers also have access to channels that are not available in Belgium: Turkish, Italian or Spanish television channels.

Word of mouth that works

If it is impossible to know the exact number of users of IPTV, this one would be, according to the most conservative estimates, around 5% of the population. Other estimates give much higher figures, up to 15%.

And this percentage continues to increase, mainly because of word-of-mouth and inflation. With ever-increasing cable TV subscriptions, more and more consumers are turning to illegal platforms.
