Iran announces arrest of all those involved in attack that killed 91 people – news

Iranian judicial authorities announced yesterday the arrest of all those involved in the suicide bombing that killed 91 people in the city of Kerman (center) on Wednesday, the official IRNA news agency reported.

“Thirty-two people have been detained in connection with the Kerman crime and are being questioned,” said the prosecutor for the city where the attack took place, Mehdi Bakhshi. Bakhshi revealed that the 32 detainees are “all those involved” in the double suicide bombing near the grave of Qasem Soleimani, commander of an elite Revolutionary Guard force who died in 2020 in a US airstrike in Iraq.

So far, Iranian authorities have reported the arrest of 11 people in connection with this attack, claimed by the fundamentalist group Islamic State (IS). Tehran also revealed that one of the suicide bombers was from Tajikistan.

The identity of the second attacker has not yet been confirmed. The prosecutor also stated that, in recent days, “16 other bombs were discovered” in the province of Kerman, “more powerful” than those used on Wednesday.

In recent months, 23 IS members who were preparing suicide attacks in the province were arrested.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Iranian soil in the past, including an attack on a mausoleum in the city of Shiraz, in the south of the country, which killed 15 people in October 2022.
