Iran Conflict Impacts Local Toy Store Sales in Hückeswagen

by

Hückeswagen, Germany – Spiel- und Lederwaren Heinhaus, a toy and leather goods store in Hückeswagen, is already receiving requests from suppliers to order Christmas merchandise, a highly unusual step for early March. The demand reflects growing uncertainty within the industry stemming from the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, and the resulting disruption to global shipping lanes.

Store owner Uwe Heinhaus reported receiving emails from Dutch suppliers urging him to place Christmas orders now, despite it being before Easter. “The world is out of kilter,” Heinhaus stated, according to reporting in RP Online. The primary concern is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil and gas shipments, and a significant route for other global freight.

The conflict has already driven fuel prices above two euros per gallon in Germany, a tangible impact of the distant war. Heinhaus explained that a substantial amount of goods are transported through the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a key point for “queergeschifft” – transshipment – of cargo. With Iran having closed the strategically important strait and threatening to attack vessels with missiles, a backlog of several hundred ships has formed.

Even if the conflict were to end immediately and the strait reopened, Heinhaus believes it would take a considerable amount of time to clear the congestion. This disruption is impacting not only energy supplies but also the availability of a wide range of consumer goods, potentially affecting the Christmas shopping season.

Heinhaus’s business, established in 1976, has evolved over the years to include a cleaning service, filling a gap in local services since Hückeswagen lost its own facility. The store currently employs a team of ten people, alongside Heinhaus and his wife, Christiane. Heinhaus emphasizes the importance of passion for his business and community support for its continued success. He is known locally for staging humorous events, such as mock burglaries and scavenger hunts, to engage the community and bring a sense of levity to everyday life.

Spiel- und Lederwaren Heinhaus offers a diverse range of products, including toys, leather goods, school supplies, and travel luggage. The store also accepts payments in Deutsche Mark, a practice Heinhaus continues to offer for customers who still possess the currency.

As of Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and no resolution to the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has been announced.
