(Tehran = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Seung-min = Iran criticized the French government’s hard-line suppression in connection with protests sparked by the death of a teenage Algerian boy in France.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Khanani issued a statement on the 2nd (local time) and urged the French government and police to avoid violence and listen to the voices of the crowd.
Spokesman Canani said, “Some European countries have treated migrants discriminatoryly and have not rectified that mistake. This discrimination will work against Europeans, including France.”
He added, “The French government must uphold basic principles such as human dignity, freedom of expression, and guarantees of peaceful protest, and stop violent confrontations with citizens.”
The Foreign Office has urged Iranians residing in France to avoid protest areas and refrain from traveling to France unless absolutely necessary.
In France, protests sparked by the death of a 17-year-old Algerian soldier in a police shooting while running away from a traffic check continued for the fifth day.
The French government says more than 3,000 protesters have been arrested so far. Local police calculated that 45 police officers were injured and 577 vehicles and 74 buildings were burned during the protests.
The police officer who shot Nael is being investigated for murder. He initially aimed for Nael’s leg, but the car hit him as it started and ended up shooting him in the chest, his lawyer said.
