Iran Imposes Travel Ban on Family of Mahsa Amini, Receiving Sakharov Prize for Human Rights

Dubai: Iran imposes travel ban on family members of Mahsa Amini, who was killed in the custody of religious police. The ban is due to Mahsa going to receive the Sakharov Prize, a human rights award given by the European Union.

Amini’s father Amjad and two brothers were banned from traveling. The award ceremony will be held in Strasbourg, France on the 12th. At present, only Mahsa’s family lawyer can attend the award ceremony. The award was announced in September.

Twenty-two-year-old Mahsa died in 2022. Mahsa was arrested by the religious police on the charge of not wearing the headscarf properly. 500 people were killed in the agitation following the death. About 20,000 people were arrested.

In 2012, Iranian human rights activist Nasrin Sotodeh and film director Jafar Panahi were also awarded the Sakharov Prize.
