The conflict between Israel and Iran is escalating rapidly, entering its 14th day with significant disruptions to global energy markets and a mounting civilian death toll. Heavy Israeli strikes have targeted Tehran, while Iran’s allies have launched retaliatory attacks across the Gulf region. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport, has sent Brent crude prices soaring past $100 per barrel, raising concerns about a wider economic impact. This vital transit point is now at the center of the escalating tensions.
The situation remains fluid and fraught with contradictions. While Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed to continue attacks on Israel and US assets unless bases hosting US forces are closed, the Iranian ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, has stated that Tehran does not intend to block the Strait of Hormuz. This discrepancy highlights the internal complexities within Iran following the recent assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the subsequent appointment of his son. The conflicting statements underscore the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s strategic intentions as the war intensifies.
Heavy Strikes and Regional Retaliation
Israeli forces launched what they described as an “extensive wave” of air attacks on Tehran on Friday morning, covering the city in thick smoke. Simultaneously, Iran has responded with waves of drones and missiles targeting Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Bahrain has reported intercepting 114 missiles and 190 drones since the conflict began on February 28, while Saudi Arabia intercepted 10 drones and later destroyed an additional 28 that breached its airspace. Attacks have also been reported in the United Arab Emirates, reportedly hitting Dubai International Airport and hotels.
Qatar’s airspace is currently closed, though Qatar Airways is operating over 140 special flights to repatriate residents and citizens. Qatar has refuted claims that it intentionally paused liquefied natural gas (LNG) production to manipulate US energy prices, stating the suspension was a result of an Iranian drone attack.
