The strategic waterway connecting regional energy markets saw a major shift as authorities in Tehran announced commercial vessels could use the Ormuz Strait during the ceasefire period. The announcement followed a brokered ten-day halt in hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah, which began at midnight. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi communicated the decision on social media, specifying that trade ships could proceed safely along an agreed route running close to Iranian territory, about which the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran had previously informed.
The temporary opening brought immediate relief to global markets, where oil prices began to decline in response to the news. For weeks, the closure of the strait—through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes—had driven sharp spikes in energy costs and strained international trade routes.

Even as the administration welcomed the commercial transit update, Washington emphasized that the American blockade of Iranian ports in the strait would continue until a comprehensive agreement is secured with Tehran. The diplomatic backdrop includes high-level discussions in Washington, following direct talks between representatives of the nations.
On April 17, US President Donald Trump had announced the agreement between Israel and Lebanon for a 10-day ceasefire, following discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Lebanese army accused Israel of violating the ceasefire on Friday morning, while Israeli authorities reported the continuation of military operations against Hezbollah. Prior to these developments, direct talks between representatives of the two countries took place in Washington, marking the first such level of talks since 1993.
Diplomatic Channels and Regional Security Pressures
Regional diplomacy has intensified alongside the military developments. Official figures from Qatar took part in talks in Muscat alongside Iran and Oman concerning the potential opening of the “middle lane” in international waters of the Ormuz Strait for free shipping, as reported by Axios citing a diplomat familiar with the situation. ABC News reported that talks between the US and Iran were set to resume after Iranian officials privately acknowledged that shelling vessels in the strait was a “mistake.” US President Donald Trump stated that the Iranians expressed a desire to return to talks, though Iran later denied this, and Trump noted that even if talks resume, the truce had ended.
The conflict saw intense escalation following US and Israeli airstrikes that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in late February, prompting Hezbollah to resume rocket fire into Israel in early March. Iran subsequently began blocking the Ormuz Strait. In mid-June, Iran and the US reached a framework agreement mediated by Pakistan to end the military conflict and secure a long-term peace agreement, with Axios sources noting discussions involving the unfreezing of Iranian funds in exchange for halting Iran’s uranium stockpiles.
However, tensions persisted as US and Iranian forces exchanged strikes. On the night of May 28, US military forces struck a facility in Bandar Abbas and shot down four Iranian kamikaze drones, which Central Command stated was an operation directed at a site where another drone launch was being prepared. A US representative described the actions as measured, purely defensive and aimed at preserving the ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported an Iranian retaliatory strike on an American airbase following the US attack near the Bandar Abbas airport. The IRGC termed the attack a serious warning
