Iran paid Hamas £200m, secret letters between group’s leaders reveal

Secret letters exchanged between Hamas leaders have revealed that Iran appears to have provided at least £200 million to the group since 2014, according to the Daily Mail.

A document, allegedly written in 2020 by a top official in Hamas’s armed wing, Marwan Issa (Abu Baraa) and addressed to the group’s leader in Gaza, Yahya Shinwar (Abu Ibrahim), showed a payment schedule totaling 154 million dollars from the Islamic Republic to Hamas coffers.

A second handwritten letter in November 2021 continues to show the receipt of at least another $68 million and references further expected payments.

The Israeli military, which reportedly uncovered the letters amid its operations in Gaza, told The Times it believed the documents proved systematic Iranian funding of Hamas before the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the war.

How did the huge sums of money get to Hamas?

They claim the money was transferred to Hamas accounts in Gaza through a complex system that sees members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force (IRGC-QF) deliver huge sums of cash to Hamas contacts in Lebanon.

Once in Beirut, the money is moved across the border by a network of brokers who use companies, cryptocurrencies, shipping transactions and various credit systems to channel the money to Hamas leaders.

The documents detail how much of the money was paid directly to various top Hamas officials, including Issa and Sinwar, as well as Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and military commander Mohammed Deif, who were involved in planning the October 7 attacks on Israeli citizens.
