Iranian police arrest prominent soccer players in a raid on a New Year’s party

Iranian media reported that the police briefly detained a number of prominent soccer players, whose identities were not revealed, in a raid on a New Year’s Eve party during which alcoholic drinks were served.

And the semi-official “Tasnim” news agency reported that several current players and former members of an unspecified soccer club were arrested in Tehran during the party that was held east of the capital.

The agency said that “some of the players were in an abnormal state due to drinking alcohol,” without going into further details.

The Young Journalists Club news agency said that the gathering was a birthday party, and added that all the detainees were released except for one person, who is not a football player.

“A lawsuit has been filed against the detainees, and details will be revealed later,” Fars news agency quoted the public prosecutor as saying.

There was no immediate comment from the Iranian Football Federation.
