Iranian prosecution after a video of “insulting the veil” during a public event

A local media in Iran reported, on Saturday, that an Iranian woman was being prosecuted for “insulting” the veil following she threw her veil on the ground during a public event.

“A lawsuit was filed once morest a woman for insulting the veil during the elections of the Architecture Organization in Tehran,” Tasnim news agency reported.

show Video A short account of the incident, widely circulated and published by the local daily newspaper Hamshahri in Tehran, shows a woman leaving a stage and throwing her headscarf on the floor to the applause of the audience.

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iranian law has required all women to wear a veil that covers the head, neck, and hair.

Iran is witnessing protests that erupted following the death of the 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, on September 16, following she was arrested by the morality police in Tehran on the grounds of not adhering to the strict rules of dress in the Islamic Republic.

Since the start of the protest movement, women with their heads uncovered have been seen in public places in increasing numbers, or women removing their headscarves during demonstrations, especially in major cities.

But rarely has the judiciary pursued one of them. On January 10, she announced that she wanted to reintroduce a law providing for severe penalties – such as exile – for those who do not respect the obligation to wear the hijab.

In recent months, the judiciary closed restaurants and pharmacies to receive non-veiled customers.
