Iran’s Attack on Mossad Headquarters in Erbil: Reactions and Condemnations

Iran announced yesterday (15th) that it attacked the headquarters of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad in Erbil, northern Iraq.

Iran’s elite force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), claimed in a statement today that it had destroyed one of Mossad’s main headquarters in Iraq’s Kurdish autonomous region with a ballistic missile in response to Israel’s recent atrocities that killed IRGC commanders.

In response, Kurdistan Autonomous Government President Massoud Barzani condemned Iran’s attack as a “crime against the Kurdish people,” and the Kurdish Autonomous Government’s Security Council said at least four civilians were killed and six wounded.

Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned Iran’s attack, which resulted in civilian casualties, in a statement today (16th) and said it would take all measures, including filing a complaint with the UN Security Council.

“The United States strongly condemns the Iranian attack on Erbil and offers condolences to the families of the victims,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

Spokesperson Miller went on to say that the United States opposes Iran’s reckless missile attacks that undermine the stability of Iraq and supports the efforts of the Iraqi government and the Kurdish autonomous government to meet the aspirations of the Iraqi people.

White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesman Adrian Watson said Iran’s latest attack did not target American personnel or facilities.

Meanwhile, the IRGC claimed that it carried out several ballistic missile attacks in Syria and eliminated members of the Islamic Sunni extremist organization IS involved in the recent attack on the memorial site of former IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani.
