Iran’s Uranium Enrichment and International Scrutiny: Latest Updates and Analysis

2023-12-29 15:04:20

On Friday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected criticism from France, Germany, Britain and the United States for increasing uranium enrichment, saying it is part of its peaceful nuclear program.

Archyde.com quoted Nasser Kanaani, spokesman for the ministry, saying, “Enrichment at a rate of 60 percent in Iranian enrichment centers has always been and will remain consistent with the country’s peaceful needs and is subject to full oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran has returned in recent weeks to accelerating the pace of uranium enrichment to 60%, close to the 90% required to develop a nuclear weapon, in a decline from a slowdown it began regarding 6 months ago.

A spokesman for the White House National Security Council said that the United States is “deeply concerned” by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s report on Iran’s increased production of highly enriched uranium.
