FOUR countries issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s decision to pass a law banning the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from operating in the country.

The four countries, namely Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Spain, warned that the decision of the Israeli Knesset or parliament on Monday (28/10) had very broad implications.

Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Spain, reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring UNRWA’s survival and pledged to continue working with global partners to support the agency’s humanitarian mandate.

This law could potentially limit UNRWA’s ability to operate in the occupied territories, which could cause Palestinian refugees to lose essential services.

UNRWA’s work is essential and irreplaceable, especially amidst the recent escalation of conflict in Gaza which has left civilians in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

This is because UNRWA plays a major role in providing important assistance and support to millions of Palestinian refugees.

“The law passed by the Knesset creates a very serious precedent for the work of the UN and for all organizations in the multilateral system,” said the statement, expressing deep concern about the impact of the decision on international humanitarian operations. (Anadolu/Ant/P-3)
