Is ARD secretly planning a tough talk show revolution?

The supreme control body of the ARD – the committee chairmen’s conference (GVK) with senior controllers of ALL state institutions from BR to Radio Bremen – has now declared the ARD talk shows to be a test case.

This emerges from an internal paper, which the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported on.

Specifically: With a view to the “expiring contracts” of the talk shows, ARD boss Kai Gniffke and program boss Christine Strobl are asked to provide “information and advisory involvement with regard to a future cross-media overall concept” by Anne Will, Maischberger and Hart fairly.

As early as the end of April, the GVK drew up specific “expectations” – they pack a punch!

︎ “It’s not enough to differentiate yourself through different moderators.”

︎ “Talk shows must differ significantly in their style, profile and content, not least in order to address different target groups.”

Rumms!

The GVK also wants to take a close look at the costs for the talk shows, demanded the ARD in April to “transmit suitable information on the cost (structures) of the talks in the first and third”.

Is the ARD now cracking down?

One thing is clear: the top ARD inspectors don’t like the similarities between the ARD talk shows.

Content: too similar. The shows: hardly distinguishable. The guests: too monotonous. According to the industry magazine “Media” Last year, 46 times it was about the Ukraine war, 19 times about the energy crisis and eleven times about Corona.

The GVK probably wants to pull the reins now and discuss “the future final editorial responsibility”.

In plain language, this means that the control bosses want to take tougher action – and also have more control over the talks.

Because it is not the public broadcaster that produces all the talk shows, but also external companies, such as Anne Will’s production company “Will Media GmbH”. So far, the station has only looked after

What’s next for the ARD talk shows?

︎ Talkmaster Anne Will (57) hands over her show to daily topic presenter Caren Miosga (54) at the end of the year.

︎ “Hard but fair” only passed from Frank Plasberg (66) to Louis Klamroth (33) at the beginning of the year.

According to BILD information, the Klamroth format will become more digital in the future and will be more aimed at a younger target group. The contract with the previous production company (owned by Frank Plasberg) expires at the end of the year. Klamroth, BILD learned, is to become the face of the young political talk in the ARD media library.

︎ Sandra Maischberger’s program has already been “fundamentally revised in order to strengthen the profile compared to the other discussion formats,” quotes the SZ from the paper. This includes an additional slot on Tuesday and new types of talks (one-on-one and two-person talks).

Just a few weeks ago, ARD program director Christine Strobl promised a “readjustment” of the talk shows. This is “part of the comprehensive program reform”.
