Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Review/Análise

cameras

The cameras of the Galaxy A54 5G

In cameras we have the rear set with three sensors, a standard Samsung scheme, we have 50MP as the main one with optical stabilization, another 12MP sensor with ultrawide lens and finally a 5MP sensor and macro lens. On the front camera are 32Mp sensor. Video capacity is 4K at 30 fps, both on the front and rear cameras.

Photos

Those who are familiar with Samsung cameras know that it adds a dash of saturation to photos, making colors more vivid and salient. Many people like this photo profile, as they are ready to post on social networks. My personal taste goes along that line too.

One thing I’ve noticed with Samsung cameras is standardization, whether it’s a cheaper phone or the more expensive ones, you’ll get a style of photo. This is good for the brand, as cheaper phones are delivering high quality photos.

Another important aspect to mention in photos is sharpness. Two years ago there was even exaggerated sharpness, something that was attenuated in 2022 and improved now in 2023. The photo comes out with good sharpness but without exaggeration, you look at it and say, wow, what quality.

The dynamic range doesn’t seem to have been modified, you can see the HDR working well in balancing sky colors, even taking pictures in the shade.

The night photos are great too, but I must say that it is necessary to turn on the camera’s night mode, otherwise there is movement and soon the photo is not as good as it should be.

Selfies

Selfie photos follow the same style, with good sharpness and colors. Dynamic range isn’t as good on the front camera, especially when you take a photo against the sun. Portrait mode blurs the corners sometimes too much, but the cropping looks good.

One setting you need to do on the selfie camera is to remove the beautification, in 2023 Samsung still leaves active filters on the camera. Enjoy now, if you haven’t already, and activate the grid to better align the photos.

videos

If you’re looking for the Galaxy A54 for content production, videos look great if you have it on a tripod. I say this because the video stabilization is not great, even more so if you are using the selfie camera.

Battery

Now let’s talk a little about the battery, with a capacity of 5000mAh the A54 promises to deliver high autonomy. In the Oficina da Net battery test, where we put the smartphone in seven different scenarios during a period of 7h45min to see if it can handle all that screen time. The idea is to simulate heavy daily use, if at the end of the test it arrives with battery, it is considered a good result.

The Galaxy A54 completed the entire period and still had 23% of battery left. A result that guaranteed him the 8th position in the battery ranking, where we have already analyzed more than 50 smartphones. That is, certainly if you use the cell phone with enough intensity, you will still have battery left over at the end of the day, what I mean is that you will have battery for more than one day.

Its charging time, which left me embarrassed, took 1h57min to complete the charge from 0 to 100%, thanks to the 15W charger that comes in the box. Samsung sends a charger, but this capacity is bad for a smartphone of this size. We see competitors shipping chargers that are at least twice as powerful. This is a point that Samsung needs to improve.

Hardware and Performance

In hardware we have Samsung’s own processor, Exynos 1380, with 4 strong cores of 2.4Ghz. It brings memories of 8GB of RAM and versions of 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

This set manages to perform reasonably well, at least much better than the predecessor A53. In the AnTuTu benchmark, one of the most complete tests, the A54 scored 503 thousand points, against 386 thousand for the A53. It outperformed the S21 FE, which when we tested it totaled 482k.

In CPU Throttling, the A54 scored 217 thousand points, against 197 thousand for the A53. I’ll leave here a link to the complete performance ranking, where you can compare cell phones.

In games it was no different, Fortnite the A54 made 54 frames of average with 40 of minimum, against 30 of average and 20 of minimum of A53. We did a full test comparing the two, you can see the A54 gaming test here.

It is proven that Samsung brought improvements in performance from the past generation and that is great, after all, the main problem we found in the A53 was this.

Construction

Galaxy A54 glass rear and plenty of bulge on the cameras
Galaxy A54 glass rear and plenty of bulge on the cameras

The device is made of glass on the back and the frame is plastic. Protected against water and dust at IP67 level. It is yet another smartphone from Samsung that inherited the design of the S line, maintaining simplicity and a set of cameras with separate sensors and popping out of the back of the device, which makes it thinner when picking up the product. The rear is still all glass as I mentioned, very reflective, marks the fingers and does not come with a protective cover in the box.

I was surprised by the size of the edges at the front, maybe this is one of the weak points I need to point out, it’s not normal to see edges as thick as these here.

It has a fingerprint sensor under the screen, so the side buttons are just buttons. It has two audio outputs, stereo and does not have a headphone jack.

Bodies

The screen is standard from Samsung too, a great Super AMOLED panel with 6.4″ in size, which I think is suitable for constant and daily use, it has extended FULLHD resolution, with 120Hz refresh rate. What I mentioned before and it bothered me were the edges exaggerated.

Prices and competitors

The day I finished this review, the A54 was costing BRL 1956, the 128GB version, which represents 33% less than the original value released. That is, just over a month since its launch, it has already lost ⅓ of its value. Which shows that it arrived at a high price, but after all, what is the ideal price to pay for the A54?

Analyzing some competitors in this price range, we have the famous Galaxy S20 FE as a competitor, they have similarities, the S20 FE performs better, it has IP68 against IP67, but because it is more recent, the A54 will deliver more Android updates, not to mention on the battery that lasts much longer. Between the two, if you were going to put the whole set side by side, I would go with A54.

We have the Galaxy M54 as another cell phone to compete, they are in the same price range, have the same processor, the difference is in the set of cameras and battery. The M54 has a battery of 6000mAh, we are still testing it, so I can’t confirm the autonomy, but as they are similar, the M54 promises to be the cell phone with the most autonomy here on the channel. The main camera of the M54 is 108MP, against 50MP of the A54. This can be a quality difference in night shots.

Responding to the previous question, the ideal amount to pay is below R$2,000, which is already the price at the moment.

As you can see, Samsung’s Galaxy A54 has had significant improvements over its predecessor, showing that Samsung can make good processors.

The Galaxy A54 delivers a set that I really liked, it agrees with me, screen and standard Samsung cameras, when I say that, you know that the screen is a Super Amoled with great quality, good colors, sharpness and fluidity. On cameras, I’m overly excited about Samsung, all smartphones whether it’s the cheapest or the most expensive are doing excellent pictures. For the cell phone market this is great, it will force other companies to work hard on cameras, something that Samsung has been dominating.

Performance is something that Samsung intermediaries do well, battery was a problem in 2022, but it seems that it was solved in 2023, now it remains for Samsung to improve its chargers, which despite people’s habit of charging at night, there are cases in which we need to charge fast, this point the manufacturer has left something to be desired.

And Android updates, so it goes without saying, when Samsung announced 4 major updates for several lines, it also made other manufacturers itch to run after it, so far no other has delivered 4 updates on mid-range smartphones.

Grades

My notes for the Galaxy A54 are:

  • Cameras: 9.0
  • Battery: 9.5
  • Performance: 8,3
  • Design and construction: 9.0
  • Bodies: 8.5
  • OVERALL RESULT: 8.9

With this result, the A54 took 11th place in our ranking of the best cell phones analyzed here at Oficina da Net, highlighting the amount charged for it at the time, which makes it the best value for money among smartphones in this price range.
